I haven’t dealt with this guy http://www.vermontbutcherblock.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=44&gclid=CIX84IzMzZsCFRI7xwodK1iSnQ but I think this is along the lines of what you are looking for. Personally I use a Magnetic block in the kitchen its easier on the edges and above the stove backsplash they are accessible and out of reach of the 3-1/2 year old. I have seen some with rare earth or neodymium magnets covered with a veneer of hardwood that just look like a block of nice wood on the wall that knives “just happen to stick to “ but I can’t find that site at the moment. Might also try looking at knifeforums.com “in the kitchen”

Good luck

Yep, I spyed the Vermont one
I looked in the KF's section, found a link to a private guy,but read on his site,he is temporarily down
I appreciate it,I'm on the hunt!

Which one did you get? I thought they were more expensive than that. I may have to replace my current block with the 18" Rock Maple or Wenge.

I'll try and get a link, but check out Williams Sonoma online for a killer bamboo knife block by Shun. I got one because it has lots large slots for big knives, not just one or two mixed in with a bunch of little ones you can't use.

**EDIT** Here is a link to a picture of the block. Not sure if you can find it anymore by itself, but check around. It's a great one and I love mine!

LOL, EDIT #2, here it is by itself, excellent price. I paid a lot more for mine.

I ordered one of these :

http://www.benchcrafted.com/magbloks.htm

I'm going to try it,my idea is to keep the higher end stuff, seperated from the "general population"
Anyone have one ?
-Vince

Nope, but I'd like to. Nice find.

I do however have a magnetic strip rather than a block with slots, and highly recommend the magnetic holders. They are more convenient, sit on the wall rather take up valuable bench space, and are easy to clean if they ever get dirty.

^ That is MUCH nicer than the exposed magnetic strip knife-destroyers I've seen for sale. Thanks, I just might be installing one in my new kitchen!

...Maybe I'll put one in the entryway too :D

I got the maple 18",it seemed the practical choice for me I have a huge maple butchers block in the kitchen,so it kinda goes with it.

jonnymac, Thanks for the link

I've seen a few others from them, too.I'm gonna hold off with a new block purchase & continue to house my production kitchen knives, plus, one custom slicer, that is already scratched up pretty good, partly, from the block I currently have
It is the AG Russell ultimate chef block, made of plastic. It served me well, for MANY years, but I have some new kitchen blades I need to store, but am trying to be less "hard" on them.
A knifemaker I am working with, told me he is going to make a block or two,as he is a woodworker, too. But I was looking for something in the meantime
That magnetic strip just might work out better for me in the long run, anyhow.
It sure looks good..I'll let ya's know Thanks for all the replies

Here's one,a custom paring knife from Mississippi maker Paul LeBatard,ATS-34 & a great contoured handle,a super thin wicked slicer
It was buried in my current block, got no love as a parer,so I had Kiah, here on BF's make up a carry kydex, witch is really quite perfect. There is so much talent around this place
I think I'll add this one to the magnet strip, inbound

Inbound as well,a 5" bladed boning knife from Rick Menefee,I'll add a picture,when I get it,if you'd like
Thanks again for the help with the block suggestions,I had to think it through, the magnet idea bloomed out of this thread :D
