Kitchen knife help

Might start baking my own bread. I have one of those old machines that makes the round loaves. From those with experience, any suggestions on the best type of knife for slicing? I hate a smashed cut.

Just as a FYI, gluten is very tough over time on the edge. I personally use a long serrated knife with steel that is fairly easy to sharpen and holds an edge well.

Also, breadmachine bread is typically very easy to cut as the baking environment stays wet the entire time thus no crust forms. I would encourage you to use your bread machine to mix and proof your lean dough's and then finish it in the oven at high temp. Preheat it to 500F, pop it in, spray the walls with water and reduce the heat to 450F for 12 minutes. Reduce the heat to 425, rotate the bread and bake until done.
 
I'm not sure that is fair. There are some knives made in Taiwan that are good value for the money.

I would simply ignore that comment as it means nothing.

As to your original question, I have a Shun Classic bread knife that I couldn't be happier with. It glides through bread almost effortlessly.

There are dedicated bread knives available.

Excuse my sarcasm, I was just messing. I'm chinese myself, so not being prejudiced.

I tried to sharpen some of our kitchen knives for my parents. The japanese stainless cleaver sharpens razor sharp no probs.
The taiwanese stainless carving knives we have, are so soft (serated one side) all folded over on the edge when I tried to sharpen
 
Victorinox 10 1\2 " bread knife (#47547) is an excellent value bread knife.
