I currently use Old Hickory kitchen knives. I really like them, but my wife cant appreciate the carbon steel. Can anyone make any recomendations for a good set of kitchen knives in the +/- $200 range? This will be a mothers day present

I am currently seriously considering Spyderco.

Tom,
I can't speak to the entire Spyderco line of kitchen knives, but I can tell you this: I bought the mini-paring knife, and it is now my wife's favorite kitchen tool.

I don't know how many knives are in a "set", but the best value [quality X price] that I've come across is George Tichbourne and Thomas Haslinger . There are a few other notables, like Ed Storch and Harildstad, but I haven't used their knives enough to give an informed opinion. George's knives, super guy, super knives, are somewhat heavier than Thomas' but you can't go wrong with either.

I have two favorite lines, one of which being Spyderco. But they can be hard to come by and if you do find some, get the plain edged versions. The serrations are set for lefties.

I have also been pleased with the Grohmann kitchen knives. They come in three variations from poly to higher end rosewood handles with bolsters, all in German stainless.

I probably shouldn't reply since I only used them once and don't know about price or anything, but my uncle got a set of Boker kitchen knives and they worked fantastic when I was last over there.
