So my best friend from HS is getting married in August and I'm thinking about getting him and his wifey a nice kitchen all-purpose chef knife. I know he likes to experiment in the kitchen and on the grill.
I am really thinking about a Kershaw Shun knife or even an Al Mar. I don't know much about the different styles and utilitarian of them. Any advice?

If you are going to spend the $$$ on a shun chef knife, get a Fujiwara from http://www.japanesechefsknife.com/ 80-90 bucks gets you a very nice chef knife. Spend the rest of the money you were going to spend on him on a Shun 3.5in pairing knife. Those two knives will set them up to do pretty much any cooking task. Those are my two main goto knives in the kitchen. Sharp enough to shave!

The shun 3.5in pairing knife is about 70-90 bucks on amazon.com

Sekizo knives are made in Seki as well, but I wouldn't really recommend them. Lots of knife industry there, not all of it is good.
