Every year I struggle with what to get for my wife for our anniversary and Christmas, 2 days apart. I found an elk kitchen set at a very reasonable price for this year.
Last year I had gotten her a Princess set that are now her go to knives. I had thought to go one better with the complete set. So far all we have used them to do is cut the Christmas turkey. I'm not sure I'll get the Princess set back any time soon.
Should the scales be treated? There appears to be some of the scale material coming loose along the blade. I do wonder if the previous owner had ran these through the dishwasher considering the "washed out" look of a couple of the handles.
I assume this is an older set with the sharpening steel rather than the spreader.
Thanks All, Happy New Year!!
Dave T.

Dave, your lucky to have gotten that set. Buck does not have those on hand. They are made up IF Available as orders come in. When I ordered a set for my wife (our 20 year anniversary) they had either one I wanted. The elk or green paperstone. I ask for the green. I'm glad
I did because of the way we use them. They have been a excellent value. Even better than a more pricey set. My wife Really likes them and
enjoys using them. I think you will too. DM

Tony, if she's got a birthday or anniversary coming up,--- call Buck. Mine took about a month to get them and she really likes them. The set is not cheap. Especially the elk antler handled knives. For my tastes I went out and found a early Empress Trio set and added them to these
knives. Which gave us some top shelf kitchen cutlery, with micarta handles and 440C blades. These allow me to do anything from processing a chicken to a deer. DM

Thanks to everyone for the comments, I made a mistake in the original post, last year I found the Empress Trio set, some times the mind just does not work so well.
Pete, I will try some Mineral oil this week.

Hopefully, that works Dave? I think they are going to keep deteriorating. They're getting close to where the marrow would be. They have been run in a dishwasher lots and lots of times. You might call a local taxidermist to find out what they use to preserve the stag?

Don

I did try some Mineral oil this afternoon. I think it is going to do the trick. I'm going to put the steak knives and pairing knives in the drawer and see how they fair.

Thanks for the information, other than a Buck or two we have always used the cheep knives, boy what a difference.

To me they don't look worn down. Just hot water and detergent has taken away their color. Which can be brought back with potassium or light dressing of shoe polish w/ a Q-tip. Don't do anything yet. Give me some time to make sure I'm steering you right. DM

Potassium permanganate. It's mostly salt. You can find it at Wally. It is use in coloring antler. A bath in this should not affect the blade or pins. Try doing a sample piece first. A piece of bleached antler. DM

I don't know DM look at the top picture, there are no ridges left and they are turning into what looks like melting ice cream? The edge of the slab of elk along the tang isn't smooth, and the block has what looks to be "run off". Shoe polish? That would work if you were never going to use them or wash them.

Dave, could you provide pictures of what they look like after the mineral oil treatment? I would very interested in how they turn out...I think I would still get ahold of a taxidermist, they're usually in the yellow pages and see what they say before doing too much...

Ok, sass I'll not stand firmly on my comment. He didn't say the edges were bad. Thus, not much use. They Could have been slammed around in a dish washer. DM

I think it was the combination of strong detergent and the extreme heat. Look at some pictures of bones found out in the desert

I have used RIT dye to color antler, mainly bright orange, when the antler had no bark. I have (am now whispering) also used a brown sharpie to fill in stag light spots, but those aren't going thru the dish washer. I have heard of people using strong tea to soak them in but it gives a general all over color. Much like English stag. If mineral oil isn't helping maybe you need some wax, I use Johnson's Paste Floor wax but the high class wax is Renaissance Was, a bit pricy, but sold by knife suppliers for handles and carbon blades. I recommend everyone on the Buck Forum read the link provided by David Martin...... 300

This is my absolute favorite Buck 301, always protected like a saint, never oiled, sharpened and no way will it gut a deer. I just hold and say 'my pretty'. Very light barked elk.

This one has been carried, oiled, sharpened, bloodied and washed a bunch of times.. I may have even waxed it a few times. It's also a light barked elk but has soaked up life. I know, lots of folks will say this is the good one, but it's just not 'my pretty'..........

Wow, lots of options. I'll go slow. I did try the mineral oil treatment yesterday, boy what a change. It has darkened the bone some and they do not have the "dry feel". I pulled the loose stuff off along the tang they are being used now and as lime allows I'll work more on them. I'll post some photos in the morning I hope, today I'm down with Gout in a foot and have limited mobility--- Good pills I should be ready to go in the morning.

Don, How many times have you used that set? They look new. I've only had my steak knives a few months and the stag still looks nice but it wants to separate from the tang unlike all my paperstones, never been in a dishwasher, only dishwasher I have I've been married to for 5+ years
