Well, since I cannot get the search function to work, I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for a couple of kitchen knives for my Mother for Christmas. She uses fair-bought 'ginsu' knives so she is not really a stickler for quality. I was looking at the Al-Mar Ultra Chef series, anyone else have some input? (My price range is $100-$200, thanks in advance).

Hard to go wrong with some of the upper-end Henckels.

Forschner, a division of Swiss Army (Victorinox), also makes a decent kitchen knife at a good price.

Buy her a pair of Cutco knives. She won't need to ever buy another. I suggest a paring knife and a trimmer. ...i just looked it up and they have these two in a set called "salad mates".I've had these two for 33 years and they do 90% of my kitchen needs.
Suggestion #2. For a few bucks more get her a Mike Mooney custom pair of kitchen knives. Similar sizes to the Cutco. Great workmanship. moonblades.com

I am *all* sorts of impressed with the Shun santoku I just got. VG-10 core at 60 HRc, gorgeous lamination and handle.
