I am fairly new to this forum...and haven't seen much regarding kitchen knives...my apologies if I am talking about a taboo subject...lol. I am thinking about purchasing the 4 knife Pure Komachi set by Kershaw/KAI....it is in my price range and looks to be a great set of kitchen knives. Does anyone have any pros/cons about this set of knives?

I own and use the Shun series by Kair exclusivley. Although I have no experience with those bright colored knives, if they are in any way similar to the Shuns I own, I expect you will be pleased.

Kershaw generally makes high quality kitchen knives, but I wouldn't touch these pastel knives with a ten foot pole. They look like Tupperware cake servers rather than quality knives. The coating is bound to be damaged in use and look even worse.

Try and find some of the Kershaw Shun series instead.

I also highly recommend the Shun knives , mine are by agrussell. They're not for just throwing in a drawer or the washing machine but if you take care of your knives they will serve you well.

I agree with the Kershaw SHUN recomendations, but I do not think that is anything like the knife that Kestrel is referring to. A quick price check showed the Chef's Knife at $ 19. There is no way you can purchase a SHUN for that price.

My guess is that it is a low price point knife (hi carbon stainless as the write up goes) that may or may not be produced by Kershaw. I agree that the colors are hideous and will most probably start to flake off.

If you have an extremely limited budget, look at a ChefMate brand at Target stores.

I would go with dexter russell thousands of professional cooks butchers etc use them every day.

and thay have a new line with cool handel design personally I like the blue jean

Kestral64, welcome to BF's and thanks for your interest in our Pure Komachi Series knives.
FYI, the Pure Komachi Series knives by Kai, all incorporate 420HC blade steel, and they all have a vibrant fluorinated-resin coating. The MSRP range for the line is $19.95-$24.95. We have never had a return on a PKS knife to date, and the colored coating is pretty permanent. Fun affordable knives for the kitchen.

I really like Shun knives. Just make sure that you get a right-handed model if you are right handed and vice-versa.

I bought a Shun paring knife to try them out, since a paring knife is probably the most used knife in the kitchen. I was really keen on the VG-10 core hoping to decrease the amount of time I spend sharpening At first I really liked it, my wife was fairly unimpressed, since I keep are kitchen knives reasonably sharp. In the first two weeks the blade chipped a tiny piece off. "Well, might be a small hard spot or problem, no big deal I'll reprofile it with a diamond." Two months later it chipped again and now the blade has chipped AT LEAST four times  . Could just be a fluke, but for the price I'd say that's unacceptable. And YES the blades are stored properly, NO I don't put them in the dishwasher. I actually have been quite impressed with the Chef's Choice knives, which are near the same price point.

marcangle, the Shun edge you describe does not sound quite right. If you wouldn't mind sending it back to us, I will replace it with a new knife. Sorry for the problem edge, this is certainly not the norm.

Thanks Thomas W., I will probably get a set of them...being that an entire set costs about the price of one Shun...I am a single dad with 4 kids that I have custody of...so price is definitely an issue. My girls won't mind the colors...I think the coating will hold up myself. Thanks for the note about them....they look like a well made set of knives for the price to me.
