Kitchenaid mixer question

I'm thinking about buying a kitchen aid mixer as a gift. I have an older one at 325 watts which seems powerful enough. I don't do large batches of bread.

I see the new models are something like 325, 400, 575 watts. Any comments from people on size? I also looked at the Hobart N50 mixers as well, which are also only around 300 watts, I'm assuming that they have a much higher gear reduction.

Any comments on where to buy, kitchenaid prices seem within $10 or $15 dollars from different places.

Thanks

That's a nice gift Dave. My wife tells me ours is 300W. Had it for 8 years and it is still going strong. Never lacked power. I would buy it wherever it is cheapest.

I dont have much to offer, but I just looked at the one we have and it says Max watts 525. I know we have one of the bigger ones, my mother mixes double batches of bun dough as well as cookies, cakes and everything else you can think of. My father makes pizza at the American Legion every other wednesday. He makes the dough here the night before. He makes enough dough to make something like 20 pizzas give or take. I know ours hasnt had any problems after 4 years of moms use and 1.5 years of dad making pizza dough.

Get the one that lifts the bowl is all I can really offer. I really like that feature. 300+ watts should be enough for home use in the 5 quart model. I don't know what more wattage would add other then flinging ingredients around at higher velocity.

I got my wife the big one about 8 years ago. She loves it, especially when she makes her Christmas cookies at this time of year. I believe that you can use all parts (ie. meat grinders, etc) from any machine from the past. Thus garage sale finds and ebay may help you accessorize:D

Bought my wife one of the Artisan series mixers several years ago. 325 max watts and it takes all the accessories. Will mix just about anything you put in it and yes it will fling stuff all over the kitchen... don't ask. Let's just say I have experience. Check out kitchenaids site for all of their models.

My wife has had the standard Classic for a few years (325 watts), but doesn't have much interest in breadmaking. I understand that the Artisan series is a better mixer and not much more expensive.
