Why do most kits we see put together on this forum do not include an firearm of some type?

I see more bladeware than one can carry but very little on folks' so called EDC, urban, or rural carry packages that allow them protection from any distance.

Not saying you have to have an firearm in your kit, but I'm just suprised that in an survival forum how few folks who post choose to carry an longer range than hand to hand tool.

You'd think that it'd be an critical piece of gear, especially in some specific locations.

Even for combat tours, I considered my knives as tools; same for when I'm outdoors. I do carry a pistol when possible, but my most important self-defense tool when outdoors is a good, stout walking stick. I do like being prepared for the "worse-case", however with the low probability, that area doesn't get much attention. The best defense when outdoors isn't a weapon, tool or any type of item...it's your situational awareness and remaining alert and observant. That applies not only to the low-probability purposeful attack, but more to avoid stepping on a snake, in a hole, rolling your ankle, catching a branch in your face, etc.

Beats me,part of my EDC is a Ruger Sp101. Then again a lot of people here come from countries where handguns are outlawed by their governments. Or they have some sort of philosophical objection to them.

I consider it a part of my kit, and I carry one, I just don't show it in the pics when I'm out....I have my ccw and I carry a springfield xd 9mm sub compact all the time.....It's in my pack when I'm hiking, it's not the 4 legged animals that I'm worried about, it's more about the 2 legged one's and when in the backcountry, pill heads or meth heads are common round these parts, so I like to keep it a suprise, so they don't know I carry a firearm.....jmho.....

I EDC a .38 snubbie and an old .22 Colt Woodsman rides in my car BOB. That old Colt is amazingly accurate and I would feel comfortable feeding myself with that and some fishing gear for a while.--KV

The jurisdiction where I live does not permit concealed carry or even regular carry, outside of regulated hunting. So that's one reason why my kit does not include a firearm. Beyond that, though, I do not feel that I need to carry a gun, nor do I have a desire to carry / pack one. Your mileage may vary.

Best,

- Mike

I rarely post a kit, but I'd probably not show my pistol because my kit is in addition to what I carry all the time. Just like I wouldn't show my flashlight or lighter that always rides in my pocket.

Some others are probably the same.

I don't think I have ever taken a picture of a kit for any forum. I also don't get too in depth about other people's kits.

I would like to say though, that this isn't a survival forum. This is a subsection of a forum dedicated to knives. Hence the URL http://www.bladeforums.com as can be seen at the top of your browser. That might be why there is such an emphasis on knives here.

We see plenty of threads about other gear, he's right-firearms rarely get mentioned. I think one of the reasons is they turn into huge threads with everyone shouting their own opinions about which firearms work better in which conditions. There are so many actions, styles, calibers, differing survival theories and locations that the threads are very undefined and wind up with little real direction. Sniper's Hide and SniperCentral.com both are huge communities with a ton of knowledge base when it comes to practically applied shooting, and would recommend either if you're looking to get more in depth. My bugout bag can carry up to three long guns hands-free, so basically I can grab the pelican cases I need based on the situation and get out of dodge. Carrying three long guns isn't overly practical I'll admit, but I know if a long term survival situation arises in conjunction with a highly hostile evac, I can pack all the heat I need.

I don't EDC a firearm because according to the chief of police I should be able to carry a police officer around with me everywhere. Hawaii is a "may issue" state that for the record has never issued to anyone outside the police dep. Not that it pisses me off... *cough*

"In the last 15 years, no law abiding citizen applying for a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Honolulu has been granted one -- not one domestic violence victim, not one person whose life was in danger, not one person working where they may be robbed at gunpoint. And the police chief has no plans to change that under Hawaii’s current law, which says the police department’s highest officer "may issue" a concealed carry permit should he choose to do so. "

Till I help change that I'll continue to badger my representatives. And hope that I can find a tiny cop to carry in my back pocket.

Yes this forum does include "survival" in the header. And yes I have posted my kits here.

I also live in the extreme Northeast of CT. My daily life and outdoors trips include parts of RI and MA. I can't always carry a firearm, so I do not include them in my outdoors kits.

When I can the firearm I bring is not geared to "survivalist" type situations, but outdoors survival..ie food gathering. This has worked for me for many, many years.

Remember, many of those posting their kits may be children, Canadians, or others deemed incompetent to possess firearms. :D

When I am not going to a park (most of the time I'm not) I always have a gun on me. However, it is likely for Coyote, as the property that I go on they want them gone. If I went to some other part of the country, that may change.

Ok, along with the emergency needs bag, I might well be carrying this 'kit' along.

Always either in my pocket, in waistband, or in the main compartment of my Maxpedition Proteus:

Not allowed to carry in Canada. Nor have I ever seen a need for a firearm when out and about in the woods.

That's the thing about mountain lions, you don't see them until they're ready to make you lunch. :D

Reminds me of something similar I saw last year; "Funny thing is, the terrorists don't care if you're anti-war".

Outdoor Life magazine had a story several years ago about a mother horseback riding with her kids out west somewhere.....when a mountain lion lept from a cliff and knocked her youngest out of the saddle. She picked up a large stick and began a very long fight while both kids left for help. When help arrived the mother was barely alive and exhausted. The rescuers promptly shot the mountain lion and the mother dropped dead. Would have been a different story with a pistol on her belt. Very sad indeed.

I can see where this is headed, and I think we may have been down this road before, say, a few dozen times ...
