I live pretty well in the country and an adult cat came to my house about three months ago and stayed. I fed it and it went under the deck and stayed a few days.
One day it came out and charged at me and hissed, I almost shot it for fear of rabies. I thought I better look under my deck, there were 2 kittens she had under there.
The kittens grew fast and I started feeding them all and noticed the kittens were all over in my truck and under the hood. Every time I started to leave I raised the hood and scared them out, kittens do not learn, they were back the next day.
One day I left, I was in a hurry and forgot to check. I came back home and found one of the kittens laying in the driveway dead. There was not a scratch on it, so I figured it was thrown out pretty hard and just died.
The other kitten was gone, no where to be found, the mother screamed for several days, she was a good mom, you could tell.
Almost 2 weeks went by, no kitten to be seen, I figured another animal must have got the carcass of the other kitten if it were killed on the same day. My mother in law called and said the neighbor that lived 1/4 mile down the road had found a kitten on her doorstep almost two weeks ago, the same day the other kitten was found dead.
I drove over to her house and it was the missing kitten, it had somehow held on under my hood and rode a quarter mile, when I stopped at a stop sign next to her house it dropped out, unhurt.
A few more weeks went by and one morning I looked out and saw the only "surviving" kitten laying in front of my truck. I went out and realized it was almost dead (it would not move), apparently distemper or possibly plant poisoning ? I carried it to it's favorite hideout in the weeds and gave it water and some food just in case it woke up.
It lay still, barely breathing for two whole days, the third day it stood up and ate a little, within 30 minutes it was acting almost normal. A day or two later it was fine.
A few days later I got ready to go get my wife at her moms house and went to the truck. As soon as I turned the key I remembered the kitten.
......... I remembered too late............I heard a couple of thumps and shut it off and saw the kitten run out from under my truck.
It ran straight under the deck, I got a flashlight and shined under the deck and it was holding one leg up, other than that it looked fine. The next day I finally caught this kitten and checked it over......... it had a broken front leg.
My heart sank...........all that this little kitten had been through and I had to break it's dang leg !
I decided to take it to the vet. and see if they could set it's leg. I took it and the vet. said it needs a pin put in to reinforce the bone, but it would be ok if it got this fixed. I told her to fix it and I would take care of it and keep until it can walk again and then find it a new home with someone that keeps cats inside.
Sorry for the long story, but there was no other way to tell it.
Update as of today : Kitten had 2 pins put in it's front leg, upper part of shoulder, it made it through the operation fine
and best of all, the nice lady that runs the clinic said they found a really good "inside" home for this kitten.
I went to pay the bill today, not cheap, but well worth it for me to sleep at night
I saw the little bugger, he would be right back under my hood in a few days if I took him home........kittens are funny little creatures.......
