I've noticed that the knives made by each company are pretty similar and I was wondering if they were owned by the same company and if not, is there one that's better than the other overall? Like if you had to choose between them which would you go with and why? I don't know much about either company, so don't beat me up too bad if this question is stupid.

No, they are not owned by the same company, and there are no similarities in them at all.

The build quality is totally different between the two, zt being the better. Also, zt has a much better warranty and it's usa based, so no sending your knife to china.

I own 2 kizers, and they are decent, but zt has them beat by a long shot, especially when it comes to limited editions.

You'll probably get an overwhelming vote in favor of ZT. KAI (Owners of ZT, Kershaw) is well established in the industry. ZT has consistently put out innovative designs, excellent fit and finish in their products, and they tend to use what are generally considered "premium" materials.

Kizer is a pretty new brand and still growing. They make nice knives at affordable prices, but they do still have some things to work on, like their warranty. I remember the Kizer rep saying they were working on eventually having a US based warranty operation but who knows how long that will be. They are certainly not as big in the game as ZT. ZT has been making knives a lot longer and has all the little nuances down pat. That being said, none of the Kizers I've handled have been losers and they have taken a very consumer friendly approach to tweeking their designs based on what their customer base wants. ZT is definitely the safer choice, but Kizer is definitely not a bad choice. Buy whichever you like better.

ZT is solid in quality and most importantly warranty/repair/CS. Kizer is up and coming, encouraging so far but need to address the post sales.

Other than both being folders the blades are very different. So is the machined shape of the titanium and the g10. Looks like the blade is quite a bit thinner as well as not having remotely the same grinds as the Hinderer designed ZT.

The Kizer is somewhat new, foreign-made and has some growing pains. Owners seem to be happy with them.
I've had many ZT's...great, absolutely GREAT folders...little comparison IMO.
