Kizlyar warranty?

I know a guy who is into military stuff. He also appears to be... political to say at least.

Long story short he bought a Kizlyar knife. He doesn't know what steel it is, his guess is AUS8 or something similar. The model is Phoenix, website says nothing about it except "corrosion resistant steel". With shipping it was somewhere around 200€ I guess, he refused to tell me exactly how much he paid.

He was thrilled with it, until he used it to attack a tree with it, and the tree won (unsurprisingly).

He refuses to tell me what exactly happened to the knife, let alone send me the pics. He said he just did some chopping and bushcraft. The most that he slipped out is "If tip wasn't gone I could fix it all myself". But since I'm a "knife guy" he thinks I'll know about warranty, even of a brand I'm not familiar with at all. And I'll sure be especially helpful if I don't know the details of what happened.

The best I can do is make thread here (at least to give you some laughs). I never had Kizlyar and probably never will. I currently have: Cold Steel, ESEE and Ka-Bar knives, and that 1 Glock knife... and I never needed warranty for either.

He is brother of the girl I'm seeing lately so I'd like to help.

Also to mention, he emailed the seller and response was "user error" (I doubt anyone of us is surprised).

If anyone has similar experience, let me know. If nothing else, I hope this was interesting read for you.

Well their website describes it as:

"Fenix is massive and extremely powerful combat knife that has indestructible one-piece construction"

So it cant have broken. It must be a lemon? Lol
I think hes just out of luck here. He learned an expensive life lesson. Tell him to get a knife with a massive and extremely powerful warranty next time.

I just want pics of it really badly. He keeps denying me tho...

Based on their website improper use isn’t covered under the warranty, which attacking a tree most likely falls under. So your friend is most likely sol. Wouldnt hurt to contact them though, they have warranty contact information on their site.

Yeah. I think they will tell him the same thing the seller said - user error.

I checked out the knife, tip looks very fine. Think that only one better stab and pry to the side are almost guaranteed to snap it off.

Why would someone spend that kind of money on mystery steel is beyond me... and then use it for "wood working" is just making me speechless. That thing is a combat knife. It's like batoning Ka-Bar USMC through thick logs and then being surprised that rat tail tang broke...

But, it is a 19yo guy we are talking about here.

Kizlyar knives usually come with a paper listing the detail of the knife. If it is the normal version, it is likely AUS8… or equivalent (since the war) like 8Cr14mov or the locally made 65X13. I own a Kizlyar as well.

I might cross the line with this, but I must add, according to a Russian blade smith I meet, Kizlyar is a gouvernement backed company, and actually has some figures promoting them by carrying their products. Therefore, they can get away with some quality control with their normal lines. Anyhow, unless you live near Russia and doesn't have sanctions, asking for guaranteed is not easy.

Though, it could also be abuse, nothing is truely indestructible.

That helps. Thanks.

We are not near Russia and we sanctioned them too.

My guess is that everything was OK with the knife and he abused it. He used combat knife for "chopping and bushcraft" - meaning he probably stabbed it into tree and lost the tip... or batoned it and messed up.

According to Arizona Custom Knives:
This Phoenix-1 by Kizlyar Knives features a black oxide coated spearpoint blade with 0.239" blade stock and 1.384" blade depth. The blade's unique cross section provides for exceptional piercing strength and has made this knife a favorite amongst boar hunters. The handle is comprised of an Elastron grip over through tang construction. Exposed tang pommel with lanyard hole. Includes leather sheath with belt loop and original paperwork. Some very minor sheath rub marks in blade finish but overall great condition. Blade Steel: French Z60

Z60 is indeed at 65x13, 12C27 and AUS-6 (another steel widely used in Russia for combat knives, notably NR2000 and Saro producs, which is a little below AUS8 in edge retention and nothing else. Anyhow, either of these are quite tough stainless.

Once I learnt that Kizlyar is actually a low-mid quality Russian maker, I stopped to look them up due to the high price compared to other makers in the same city of Kizlyar.

While they do have cool and unique designs, you can get many other (and better) knives for these prices...
Starting from Terava Jakaripuukko to Becker, ESEE... to ANV and LionSteel.

Too bad about his knife. I have a Ukranian made knife by brand BPS. No problems at all!

Also, I'll just leave this quote by Otto von Bismarck here...

Due to the war , I'd highly doubt getting help from a Russian company,I have a couple of Chinese copies and maybe his was a fake? Mine are DC 53 and one has G10 grips the other 3 silver blade and micarta grips, they are razor sharp but I haven't tried abusing them yet, hope this helped
