In both my professional and personal life I draw my pocket knife and use it several times a day. I work with several water pipeline crews installing water mains. Knives are tools on these crews. You dont have to be near a crew very long before you see knives in use. The task at hand can be tortuous and brutal. Cheap knives break, and good knives strain under the severe use they are put to.

I have been carrying a small Sterling knife sharpener that fits in my wallet. Several of the foremen of the crews carry one also. The sharpener has two carbide cutting bits glued onto an aluminum frame that you draw the blade between. It is a good sharpener and is always available to sharpen a blade.

Recently a hunting buddy and close friend gave me a sharpener similar to the one I had made by Klawhorn Industries.

The Klawhorn sharpener is certainly the highest quality sharpener of any kind I have seen. It is as high-tech as a B-2 bomber and built like a tank.

Klawhorn makes several models. Shown in the picture is the "Redi-Edge standard" (the one that looks like a small flashlight), the "Redi-Edge Pocket Pro" (about the size of a credit card", and my favorite, the "Redi-Edge Tactical Sharpener".

In my opinion, the best feature that these sharpeners have is the convienence of rotating or changing the bits. Each set of bits can be swapped and rotated for a total of 4 times. Rotating is a matter of using a small hex allen wrench.

You can also purchase a broadhead holder to sharpen your broadheads with.

The construction of the sharpeners are fine machined aircraft aluminum. There is not enough time for me to describe how well these are made. They are first class.

The edge they put on broadheads and blades can be described as "Wicked". With a little time you can easily put a hair popping edge on your knife. The edge is not like a keen edge you would put on with a ceramic sharpener, nor is it ragged. It is a very sharp, serviceable edge. I have cut myself with the edge, and it can be instant trama.

The Tactical Sharpener is my favortie. It will still fit nicely in my billfold. It also has a ceramic honing surface chemically bonded on the surface that you can further hone you edge if needed.

I contacted Klawhorn Industries at Klawhorn.com and used the online ordering form. My order arrived three days later. A first class service with a better than first class product.

I never liked the kind of edge those style of sharpeners produced in terms of sharpness or edge retention, though I never used that particular brand. They do work very quickly though and take up very little space.

Agreed..., although the space factor is nice.., I've never had one that really put an edge I like on a knife (although I also haven't used that particular model)....

Thanks for the heads-up..., they are all worth trying I suppose... :)
