I have been borrowing & using my close friend's Klean Kanteen pretty often, so she got me one as a present for the holidays.

Klean Kanteen is a brand of water bottle. They are made entirely out of steel, with a steel stopper. They come in a 27 ounce size, and a 42 ounce size. The 27 ounce is made to fit a bike water bottle carrier, I think. They have a nice, wide mouth.

Since they're steel, they don't leach any plastic into your water––no plastic taste, no questionable stuff in your drink. They are also tougher than plastic water bottles are; they won't easily crack if dropped or banged, only dent. You could boil water or cook food in one, if you needed to in an emergency survival situation. And if you needed to use one to defend yourself, the neck makes a good handle to grip, and the steel design filled with the weight of a couple pounds of water seems like it would pack quite a wallop.

Despite the tough, steel design, they don't seem much heavier than Nalgene water bottles.

Try Sigg bottles.

Aluminium, therefore lighter, yet still effectively indestructible.

My experience with SIGG bottles has been mixed...they are extremely durable, but the water tastes metallic and I even had one that leaked a little bit.

Yeap. Sigg does leave a slight metallic taste. They are durable though.
I still like lexan bottles. They are durable enough for what i do and they don't leave any weird plastic taste.

I don't care for aluminum (that's al you minium for the Brits). :) Nissan makes a nice stainless thermos that has the pop up spout like a bottled water container.

I'm familiar with Sigg bottles. They're not bad, but I like these Klean Kanteens much better.

I prefer these because: 1) the stopper is steel...your water does not contact any plastic, thus no plastic taste and no plastic compounds in your water; 2) I prefer steel to aluminum for a drinking container; 3) the Klean Kanteen has a wider mouth, making it easier to see whether the inside is dirty, and easier to clean inside; 4) the Klean Kanteen has a longer neck, which makes it more secure to hold it like a handle, should you ever need to use this for self-defense.

I'm a big fan of the popular Nalgene bottles. They take freezing well, don't have the plastic taste, and are almost indestructible. I use the wide mouth 32oz Lexan for when I play ball. I even got a narrow mouth 32oz Lexan for holding my water/radiator fluid mix that I use to top off my car every so often.

A lot of plastics have been found to give off estrogen when used as drink containers. I don't know if nalgene is included in this, or not.

Some PVC water pipes used in housing have been identified with this too.:eek:

Besides the xenoestrogen concerns, I've broken a lot of Nalgene bottles. The most fragile part of them seems to be the cap (which is easily replaceable with the softer plastic Nalgene bottle caps... but then you are back to the plastic taste). Besides the caps, I've found that the bottles crack pretty easily, and are also subject to melting from DEET. I still use some Nalgene bottles (by the way, I also use CamelBak-type water bladders), particularly because the wide mouths allow for more varied uses (like mixing sports drinks into them), but I think I'm likely to switch my bottles entirely to these steel ones.

A SIGG-style bottle with some kind of plastic coating (one that doesn't emit estrogen of course) on the inside and a secure seal would be pretty cool.

One company makes an Aluminium bottle with a ceramic layer inside so no odd taste and you can put fruit juice and other mildly acidic drinks into it. IIRC they are made in Spain.

Well that explains the man boobs I'm starting to grow and the pissed off mood I get in once a month. I'm throwing out my Nalgene tonight before my ...shall we say unit, shrinks any more than it already has.

Ceramic would be even better of course. Thanks for the heads-up.

Skyline,

A titanium thermos sounds slick. I may have to get one.

Do these thermoses (thermi?) come in much larger sizes? Can you get one with an all metal stopper, with no contact with plastic? Could you safely boil water over an open fire in one, if you had to?

Temper,

Can you give us a URL for the ceramic lined aluminum water bottles from Spain? Thanks.

Steel, aluminum, lexan are all fine, I simply use and reuse the PET bottles that bottled water comes in.

PET is lighter, more common, and cheaper than other containers. While it is less durable, I've never had a failure while hiking or biking.

Plus it's recommended for Sodis which is convienient for emergency situations.
