KMD (Knife of Mass Destruction) goes undetected at airport!!

I saw that on the news.

If the past holds true they will go arrest him now.

What is up with Tom Broka? Is he drunk? Or just getting old and senile" I have noticed this for awhile now. He seems to be getting worse.

Oct. 1 — Airport security screeners have confiscated more than two million knives since February, 2002. But how many did they miss? Plenty, based on the experience of one frequent flyer who traveled halfway around the world with a dangerous weapon accidentally stowed in his carry-on luggage. California businessman Joe Pickett told NBC News he was screened at least 10 times in nine different airports, and yet no one found the knife in his bag. His girlfriend, who traveled with him on several of the trips and was there when Pickett placed the knife in his bag, vouches for his story. NBC’s Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers reports.

I love how a pocketknife is automatically a "dangerous weapon." :barf:

This is so stupid, first, maybe if more people had knives on flights, it would be harder to hijack them, further, since there are plastic, fiberglass, G10 and ceramic blades available to anyone, there is NO way to prevent a determined terrorist from getting at least some type of sharpened object on a plane, unless of course we decide to frisk and anally probe 100% of all passengers, and that aint gonna happen. So, if a terrorist can and will get a knife on board, exactly why should we prohibit law abiding persons from doing the same and at least having a chance to thwart a hijacking? Well, of course this argument makes far too much sense for liberals to accept. Its the same argument we make with guns, outlaw guns and only outlaws will have them, but some people dont seem to understand this very simple concept.

Quick quiz, Vermont, they have virtually ZERO restrictions on gun ownership and carry and they have virtually no crime. Washington DC, they have the MOST restrictions on guns, they are completely illegal to possess let alone carry and they have tons of crime. Hmmmm, it would seem that there is not a strong corrolary between restricting guns and reducing crime, and in fact there is a positive corrolary between allowing guns and reducing crime. Liberals say thats because DC and VT are different geographically and demographically, maybe so, but despite that, the numbers and figues are still too grossly out of whack for geography to explain them. The fact remains, if restricting guns reduced crime, DC wouldnt be the crime infested sh*thole it is.

This is the kind of media sensationalism that has the average person thinking that every knife is a weapon. Pathetic BS!

That's because it was serrated. At least they got the nose hair scissors.

So what kind of a dipsh*t calls the news and reports this? If he was really concerned shouldn't he call the TSA directly and speak to someone?

I watched that whole report, and something about it didn't seem right. The guy who owned the knife said he received it as a "present." Great. You're in a job that demands you travel for six months out of the year, and have friends who give you $4.00 knives for presents? And top of that, they just stick it in your briefcase, knowing full well that at some point you'll be going through airport security? Get some new friends.

Second point is that when he tried to open it, he didn't try to do it one handed, but instead held the handle with one hand and pulled the blade open using the plastic thumb pimple (thumb studs are on real knive-that one had a "pimple"). If he was so unfamiliar with opening a one-handed knife, why the heck would someone give it to him? It would seem to be a peculiar gift for someone who didn't exactly appear to be a knife knut.

I ain't buying it. :grumpy: geegee

geegee,

It's obvious isn't it? His friend doesn't know squat about knives either. Sounds like he took the advice of those Home Shopping folks and bought 200 knives for $50 to give as "gifts" to his friends. The guy who got the knife is obviously not a knife guy and it seems to me that that knife would be a perfect gift for him since he wouldn't know any better anyway. Try passing one of those things off on someone here and see what kind of reaction you get ;)

Oh no! Maybe next someone will get on a plane with toenail clippers!

What a crock of bull butter.

The media just loves to make mountains out of molehills. Same as all that garbage they spouted when the Glock came out. They tried to say it was a 'plastic gun' that could get through metal detectors despite the slide, barrel, innards, magazine and cartridges all being metal. People who don't know better just file it away as 'fact' and never think about things. Me and a buddy visited my mother last week, and I showed her his Glock 27 and she said " Oh, that's one of those plastics guns that metal detectors can't see!". Oh, man. The media is totally reckless and absolutely shameless.

Not really reckless, but definitely shameless. The media need to beat up stories so they can sell their crappy papers/tv news so lots of people desperate for a little excitement in their lives will read/watch which convinces the advertisers to pay big bucks for advertisements so the media types get lots more money. Simple really.

Unfortunately real news is not usually that exciting so some guy turning up at an airport with a letter opener is suddenly a crazed terrorist out to hijack another plane and crash it into something.

I'd disagree. They are reckless due to the fact that their misinformation and exaggerated stories cause long term harm. People take what the media says at face value, and end up holding long term opinions and biases based on false information.

I'm kinda with Steven here - out here in Seattle a few years ago, I was watching the news and there was a story about a stabbing... Okay, ya know those little pictures they post in the upper right hand corner that sorta tags what the story is about? Well, our local station used the pictograph of a 1911 .45... Now what on earth could that have had to do with the story about a stabbing? That is where the irresponsibility of our media truly shines... Now, if we say something wrong and "derogatory", as citizens, we can be sued for slander or whatever... Why can't such public entities be held legally accountable for misrepresenting the facts? (I know, the crimes aren't quite the same, but hopefully y'all will get my drift?)

And people wonder why I won't own a TV... (I'll watch, but I won't own! :D )

Did anyone catch the part where Lisa Myers says "one TSA spokesman called the knife 'borderline'..."

"Borderline"?!? Has the "TSA spokesperson" been under a rock since 9/11? Sounds like a very well-informed gov't employee, great person to have as a spokesperson.

He should be arrested - not for carrying the knife, but for being a whiny pantywaist that was so shocked and appalled that he just had to call MSNBC and grab his 15 minutes of fame. Whining media hound.

Plus, I don't believe him, for several reasons.
1) Maybe he has an agenda, or maybe he truly thinks the knife was there all the time but it really wasn't.
2) No matter how incomptent the screeners, that's a lot of checkpoints to slip by "accidentally".
3) This guy flies 6 months out of the year, and his GF saw him put this knife into his CARRY-ON bag? Why would he do that? Why would she let him do that, knowing he takes it ON THE PLANE?
4) It was hidden so well that 10 checkpoints couldn't find it, yet he just stuck his hand in one day and "lookee here what I found", right? Sure. In all that time, he never rooted around in his carry-on? What kind of frequent flyer is he, if he never looks in his freaking carry-on bag? Sounds like an inefficient way to pack, if you never use the bag you carry with you all the time.

I call bullshit, and my distrust of the media, especially televised media, falls another 300 points. That makes the running total somewhere around *adding machine* negative thiry-eight thousand.

FYI thats the same knife a co-worker got me as a gift some 4 years ago. It cost him $1 in Florida and I have seen similar knives in AutoZone for about $4. Appropriate considering I only use the pakichintaiwa knives for down and dirty DEFCON 2 auto repairs.

Can he even prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he had the knife in that bag thru ten airports? How do we know that he's just not lying?

DaveH, the knife is legal for possession, you can't get charged unless your caught in the act for something like that.
