Does it make sense to go from a gold 1500 to a chosera 400 > 600 > 800 > 1000 > 2000 etc?

If not, when would I use a chosera 400, 600, 800?

I don't use Chosera at all, I use wet/dry sand paper starting at 2,000, 5,000, 7,000 and 12,000 grits. I have a few that are in the middle of these such as 2,500, 3,000 & 10,000 and I use them when I think its needed.
Put the paper on glass blanks with 3m Photo Mount. It glues well and comes off easily. If you use the paper you will not need Kangaroo strop or lapping tapes. Remember to only go in a down direction and don't press hard or it will round the edge.

Should be able to get a burr with 400 and work as high up as you want. Difficulty with the burr, grab the 300 gold or lower. I think if i remember, the 400 chosera and 1500 gold are close, you’ll get a refined edge with chosera but the 1500 is a good working edge. If your shooting for mirror and have both the 1500 and 400, try the 1500, move to the 400, see if your going backwards. Lots of steps going from all gold to all chosera, probably a little overkill.

Yeah that is a lot of steps, good thing you mention that a chosera 400 and gold 1500 is about the same. I compared a 400 stone to chosera and stone felt grittier so I guess # is relative to type of stone ?

Yes, different rating system. My experience is that s30v/s35vn and softer steel, chosera works great for a mirror. M390, 20cv, id stick with gold. More experienced people can can use chosera on harder steels but i didnt like the results. The harder the steel, the more you’ll wear the chosera. Id lightly flatten or lap the chosera after every or every other use, keep them from dishing or glazing.

The 400 chosera is a medium stone while the 1500 gold is a fine stone. Not sure the scale gold is rated by but check out gritomatic website, take a look at kme stones, choose one of the stones, he has a grit chart, gives you a rough idea where the stones fall. (Chosera are there but not kme gold but you’ll have quite a few rating systems to compare to) Pick and choose what to use or experiment, see what works best for you.
