Does anybody have any information on the Gold Series stones based on the Grit Chart? Such as how many Microns, etc.

I'm looking to buy a set of more fine stones after their Gold Series X Fine at 1500 Grit.

Any recommendations on which stones after that to work my way closer to .5 Micron.

The setup I have is the translucent then the black arkansas stones you could also go with their films

from my notes, the question mark means the value is not authoritative. Sal reported grits for sharpmaker rods, and DMT reported EEF, with comment by forum expert with waterstones whose name i forget. i use DMT EEF after KME 1500 and am satisfied with the increase in quiet (sic:-) when cutting paper s's
Sharpmaker
medium= 12-14 microns= 800-900grit,
fine= 7-9 mics= 2000-3000 grit,
ultrafine= 3-4 mics= 4000-6000 grit

KME DIAMOND STONES W KIT = 140 , 300 = 45 micron , 600 = 10? / 25? micron, 1500 GRIT = 9? micron

DMT TAN (EE) Diamond - Extra-Extra Fine (8000 mesh, 3 micron) It will polish steels with high levels of Vanadium, about equal to a 3k-4k waterstone at best.

Yeah I'm currently using the Sharpmaker and free handing with UF Rods and it does a good job but I'm wanting something a little better. Something I can re-profile with alot easier and that will be very consistent.

I will take the DMT EEF into consideration but after the gold series, I would prefer to switch away from diamond stones.

Yeah it didn't even cross my mind to call but I will definitely do that.

Get ahold of Ron at KME. He will probably tell you to try the 4 micron emulsion with a kangaroo strop. And its great advice.

For reprofiling, you'll want to start with something more coarse.

The Sharpmaker's CBN rods (400) will do mild reprofiling.

But, since you free hand, get the DMT XXC (120) or XC (220) stones or KME XC (140) or C (300) stones.

Well I currently also have a DMT Dia-Sharp C and F flat stone. I've got to the point that I can freehand pretty well but get tired of doing it all the time..

I just want the clamping system so it's more consistent. I've owned my sharpmaker for 3 or 4 years now and the rods fit very loosely in the base so over time I believe the actually 40 degrees has gotten a little bigger.

I am just trying to figure out which stones to buy that will fit the KME for the further progression after the Gold Series XF at their 1500 Grit.

By the way where are you in VA. I'm originally from Wise County then lived in Va Beach for 4 years.

KME has Chosera stones in 2000, 3000, 5000, 10000 as well as CBN sprays in 4, 1.5, 1, 0.5 microns.

DMT makes the KME 4" stones so the DMT Aligner 4" EEF stone in 8000 / 3 micron should work well.

In my DMT Aligner system, jumping from EF 1200 to EEF 8000 doesn't seem too large.

I'm in NoVa outside DC.

Your comments reminded me to add a couple thoughts to the thread-

I bought my DMT EEF off Amazon and had to cut it down to fit the KME, and it was a non-issue. I also wanted to mention that the steel you are sharpening can guide your choice. If you don't have any hard steels like my benchmade D2 knifes or high vanadium content steel like my benchmade m390s, you might enjoy using KME's standard stone kit and adding a black Arkansas? I'm thinking of getting a set just for teaching the boys to keep their Chinese and Japanese utility steals (Kershaw, CRKT, a couple traditional Boy Scout pocketknives, etc) sharp. The advantage of sticking with the KME specific stone kits is they are the same dimensions so no stone thickness compensator is needed.

The hardest I have is some M4, 3V, s90v and probably 204p. I'm not thinking I should have a problem because after the Gold Series 1500 it's pretty much about the refinement and getting the mirror polish
