I already own the original KME, and have just received the KME Precision Control Plus, however, upon opening it, I have found it is missing the Guide rod for the stone carrier.

This has lead me to have second thoughts at this point, and wondering if I went wrong and should have gotten the TSProf.

I really liked how the KME Precision control plus had dual jaws, and were able to only use a single jaw and have it still be centered.

Wanted to get others opinion, and figure out where I should go from here.

I am very happy that the KME now has 6" stones, 360 degree rotation with the metal bearing for the guide rod now. Let's you do much larger blades, 20"+.

The one thing I do worry about with TSProf is that they are based out of Russia, and worry about getting parts and pieces for it if anything were to ever break etc.

Currently working with the company I ordered it from (DLT Trading) to get the guide rod replacement for it. Left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth but I'm sure its not their fault, likely just a mistake during packaging.

I've had a K03 for a while and I love it. Extremely well built, solid, and versatile. When I bought it, I was upgrading from another system because I wanted angle accuracy and fine control and the K03 delivered. I don't know anything about the new KME adjustment mechanism, but the rack and pinion on the K03 is extremely smooth and granular.

As to TS Prof being Russian, I bought my K03 from the TS Prof website and it shipped out of Tennessee, and Gritomatic is in Georgia and sells systems, parts and upgrades.

I see, hm. The new KME system has a knob adjustment system that almost feels like, hydraulic in nature, its extremely smooth.

Would you ever see a reason to go from the updated KME to a TSProf or vice versa?

Probably not.

I'm at risk of speaking out of my depth since I haven't used any KME, but after watching some videos on the new KME system, it does seem to be more or less feature equivalent with the K03, for several hundred dollars less. I like that the new KME has a thickness compensator built into it for aftermarket stones of varying thickness, but you need to be further investing in stones for that to matter. I do get the impression that you get higher build quality with the K03, but if that doesn't translate into the quality of your sharpened edges, then it is up to you to decide if the machine feeling more solidly built is worth a higher price tag.

There is also a new TS Prof sharpener that has been shown, but I don't think there's any information yet on when it will come to market.

I've had the TSProf KO3 Hunter Pro for about a year, and I LOVE the thing. The stones it comes with are okay, I've used them on loads of different blade steels, but I ended up getting a set of PDT CBN stones with a couple of strops and I can pretty easily get mirror finishes on all my knives - from a 14c all the way up to a magnacut, so far. I also added their new quick release clamps and a convex lens, which has been great for my larger fixed blades.

I used the older version of the KME for a couple of years before switching to a K03. The KME could produce a fine edge, but I never could trust the clamp and the angle adjustment was frustrating. If they've have improved those two issues, the KME could be a keeper.

Even the latest updated KME is eons behind a TSProf K03 / Pioneer / Kadet; a Hapstone R2 / RS; or any Kazak sharpening system. It really is like playing with a cheap plastic caliper compared to a high quality Mitutoyo - both can measure, but one is a toy.

You really won't be sorry if you upgrade to one of those.
