KME Sharpener - Question about the stones for this sharpener

Do the standard stones(aluminium oxide/ceramic) that come with this sharpener cut steels like vg-10 and s30v well? I've been debating between the standard kit and the diamond kit for my spyderco knives.

I've never used my standard stones on anything above AUS-8, so I can't directly answer your question. However, considering their current diamond kit comes with 3 of their excellent Gold Series hones at a mere additional $25 over the standard kit, I'd totally go with that, were I buying a KME for the first time. If you're a super steel fan, you'll eventually end up wanting the diamonds anyway, and they cost $25 apiece separately plus shipping.

Just took a glance at what stones they give you and they should be able to handle those steels, it just take awhile longer to use. I think spending the extra cash for the diamonds would be a very wise investment both for the time it takes for sharpening and in the long run as you will eventually start wearing down those stones with repeated use if you plan on using it a lot causing them to hollow out. Where as the diamonds will stay flat and just not be quite as aggressive.

I've used the standard stones on 154cm, S30V, and even CPM M4. They handled all of them, but about half way through the S30V and M4, I was kicking myself for not getting the diamond set. Like Bob6794 stated, they are a smart move if you value your time and sanity.

If for some reason your not interested in the full diamond set you can always pick up the DMT XC or XXC stones and use that with it to do the heavy metal removal.

Alright, I think I'll go with the diamond set. I guess the extra money will be worth it in the long run. I just really like ceramics for some reason. Maybe it's the clean finish they leave.

You mean the 4" DMT's that fit into the KME system? How do those compare to the gold series diamonds?

Another recommendation for the diamond set. I'd also suggest adding the black arkansas stone that KME sells.

Take the cost of the diamond set and add that to the cost of the ceramic stones separately. Now take the cost of the ceramic set and add that to the cost of buying the diamond stones separately. You can also switch out the DMT's for the GS's to play with pricing. Now compare. Then add the cost of the Chosera's to both of those. You might as well toss in the cbn sprays at this point.

Does anyone know who makes the Gold Series? I haven't really seen any none bias reviews of the gold stones yet and was wondering if there was another branding i could use to look for comparisons.
