KME Sharpener Question

I've been looking at the KME Sharpener System and the specs on the KME site says it's adjustable from 17 to 30 degrees. Does anyone know if that is really as low as it will go? All of my kitchen knives are set at 15 degrees except my Santoku which is 10 degrees so the 17 low end isn't doable for me.

I kinda consider myself the resident expert on the kme system. I have been in direct contact with the owner/inventor Ron, for a while, of the the kme. In my opinion, it is the best you can buy for the price.

To answer you question, you can flip the guide part of it upside down and get it to about a 8 dps angle. I did it last night in fact.
This is the setup I have

Here is a video of Dean O demonstrating it.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the video a little later on. Appreciate the answer.

Edit: The video looks like it will easily do the trick. Went ahead and ordered the KME. I had a call and email into them but hadn't heard anything back, that almost convinced me not to order but I guess time will tell.

Did you order it from the KME site or oldowan tools? I ordered mine straight from Ron but have had great experience through Oldowan as well.

Thanks for the upside down trick..love my KME.

No problem dude.
I told Ron he really needs to post that as a feature on his website, that you can set it from 8 dps to 30 dps, that would make the deal a lot sweeter if they knew that

BTW..that 8 dps is dependant on the width of the blade. On a zt 560, the lowest it would go is 8 dps without hitting the jaws, on a wider knife, like say a kitchen knife, it would be lower

Ordered it from KME, checked Amazon but it actually cost more on Amazon which is unusual.

I agree, this almost when into my won't do it pile until I watched that video. The 17 degrees wouldn't work on any of my kitchen knives and I need 10 degrees from my Santoku.

Why is there such a huge difference between the angle you are claiming and the angle shown in the video above? The lowest he was able to go on a very wide blade was a bit over 10 degrees. On a more narrow blade it was just over 13 degrees. You must be doing something differently than he showed in the video.

Brian.

He was making sure you had plenty of room, I think I had done just a real quick test with my cube and went as low as I could go which came out to about 8dps, but for realistic sharpening it probably is closer to 10. I didn't spend but about 10 seconds seeing what it would go down to, I was in a hurry tring to finish up a reprofile bevel set which I am still working on as we speak.

Here's my morning test...

I clamped a 7 1/4" Santoku style knife to the first mark, extending approx. 1 5/8" in front of the clamp, with just under 1/16" clearance between the stone and the clamp (with the guide 'flipped'), came in at 9.30°.

Need to change the focus of this thread. I ordered the KME thinking that the DMT Aligner stones would fit it now I'm wondering if that is true, does anyone know for sure?

What size are the dmt aligner stones

Really, as long as they are about 4" long they will fit. The stones for the kme are 1x4, so you could go wider but not to much longer

The aligner stones are 4 3/8 " so I guess it's still an open question if they will fit. I talked to Ron this morning but didn't think to ask. At any rate while talking to him I told him to go ahead and ship my order so I'll know the answer by the end of the week.

The diamond hones that come with the system are awesome. Beyond that I use their strops with the CBN emulsions. Looking to get the 8 micron emulsion to close the gap between the 1500 grit and the 4 micron emulsion. Even with the 1.5 micron you get an awesome polish and they have down to .1 micron.

Yup
..I was having the same trouble with the gap from 1500 to 4m strop. So I took 2 old kme stones I had and cut strips of 400 and 1500 wet sand to help take the scratches out before the polishing phase. I was thinking of using the 400 grit after the 300 grit stone and the 1500 wet sand after the 1500 stone since those diamond stones cut more aggressively than the wet sand stuff
