KME Sharpener question

I've recently purchased a KME sharpening system and really like it. After a bit of practice I'm getting great results. My question is this. I put a Ka-Bar Jarosz folder with tanto point in the clamp and unless I steepen the angle a good bit the stone hits the thumb studs. I tried moving the clamp up and down the blade and changing the angle but the thumb studs always hit the stone unless I steepen the angle. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone know if the thumb studs are threaded or pressed on this blade? Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike...can you cant it in the jaws a bit to push the thumb studs further back? Check out how knifekrazy positions the knife about a minute and a half in.

Well since it's a tanto point, ideally I would sharpen it in two parts, the straight edge then the tanto point separately. But yes to answer your question I did cant it every which way. The thumb studs always hit unless I steepen the angle and I'd have to reprofile the blade. Thank you!

Clamp it such that the thumb studs butt up against the side of the clamp. That should give you the most clearance.

You'll end up with a progressively more acute bevel angle since it's not centered, but it's easily repeatable and makes for a slicier forward section of the blade.

I've no idea whether they're removable. Haven't handled that particular knife. I'm plenty familiar with having to come up with creative sharpening angles though. Looking at you ZT!

I thought the same when I first began using a fixed pivot point type system but I was wrong. The angle does not change. Check out this dude’s video...

I wonder if that translates to a blade that isn't perpendicular to the pivot/rod? I'll have to play with the kit tomorrow and see.

Mike, email the company now and ask if the thumb studs are screwed or pressed and proceed with the information given.
I like TLE's idea of just putting the thumb stud against the side of the clamp.
There is always a degree or so difference in the measured angle (iOS App iHandy) of all the knives I sharpen (no folders over 4 inches), centered on a KME, between the hilt and the tip of the blade, But the bevel looks consistent and the difference does not seem to, well, make a difference in the edges ability to cut. I have thought about sharpening the tips of blades that have a pronounced curve separately but have never bothered. I simply rounded the transition of the one tanto I have, a CRKT Hissatsu.

Did you try and remove them? Seems like the only option. Ask the manufacturer if you can't find out here.

Thanks so much for all of your responses! Sorry I haven't been on here to respond! The Thread was moved and I had no idea where it was or how to find it! Love this forum but it can be confusing at times. Thank again for your help! I'm trying your sugestions!
