I just can not seem to get just a flatstone and my unsteady hands to work very well.

Anyone have experience with KME sharpener?
Their broadhead sharpener is getting rave reviews and wonder if people had a thought on their knife system.

Clamp systems get VERY trying for ANYTHING more then heavy cutting, touching up is a PITA. :barf: I don't know about this system, but from using my Lansky....

I'm gonna have to say... Spyderco Sharpmaker. Sorry, everyone says it, but I wasted soo much time trying to get a good edge on my knives without it...
I don't care if this was a Benchmade product, or even Cold Steel, I would buy it.

The KME website has a vid of the product and it seems easy and quick enough, but I am not speaking from experience.

I went to Spyderco's website and could not find a video of it in use.
This sort of shows it. But how do you get the right angle? Seems just a vertical freehand to an extent.

I have the extra fine and ultimate finishing hones in addition to my GATCO system. I also finish on leather strops with white and red polishing compound.

When I touch up I usually only need to go to the strops. Sometimes to the finishing hone (it is a ceramic).

I would disagree that touchups are a PITA with a clamp on rod guided system. You do not have to go all the way back to the coarse stone when you are touching up.

All I have used, clamp systems wise, is the Lansky, which I actually WANTED to like. Really, I did. I didn't have any extra cash to buy anything else, so I tried to get it to work for me for about a year and a half, never could get anything good..... Never tried a GATCO, probably never will, I'm scarred for life. :)

There are a variety of guided systems on the market. Some are more difficult to use and not easily assembled for repeatable results. This one looks like one that should be a easy one to use without problems touching up as needed. This kit has good hones and what looks like a well designed clamp system. I'd say go for it if you need one. Get the Coarse kit and buy and additional extra fine hone for a sppoky sharp edge. The Lansky's, like many other's available, are tedious to set up and worse to try to use for touch up which is probably why we've heard the responses posted but there are excepetions. The best systems I've used are the DMT Magna guide (my favorite of all of them), Gatco (both under $50) and the very best is the Edge Pro (under $150-200 depending on accessories and kit selected).

Do your research and buy what suits your needs and don't be afraid to return it if it doesn't meet your expectations.

I am not sure what I am doing differently than others that have had set up problems. I just clamp up a knife check the angles and go.

The ease of use for me of the GATCO system has really pleased me. The end results I am achieving, while probably not up to the most experienced sharpener's standards, are pretty impressive. I have sharpened a few knives for the guys at work and they have been pleased.

If you cann't get a good edge with "input any system here" it is you that is the problem not the system. Yes some are a little faster to set up or use than others but they all work and work fairly well. Once you have learned how to get an edge you can do it with anything.
