Does anyone have a recommendation on which set to get. Ive been looking at getting one for a long time no and i think im going to buy one very soon. But i was wondering if anyone had bought more then just the basic four Diamond stone set and if so which one do you have? Or should i go the other rout should i just buy the base set and then buy pocket stones the same size that fit in the system. What do you think?

Also you can go look at all the set if you want to see them. http://www.kmesharp.com/kmeknshsy.html

Thanks

Unless you're wanting a mirror finish, you'll be very happy with the four stone diamond set and maybe a strop.

Oh, and I'd recommend the base too. Not strictly necessary but very convenient.

I've decided to stick with KME's diamond stones and their kangaroo strops, I don't believe I need the "stone thickness compensator".
So I ordered the basic kit and added the base, an extra course diamond hone 100 grit plus the 'beast' hone 50 grit, 4 micron strop & paste, pen knife jaws, and the convexing rod.

My order was at $33 less than getting the deluxe kit, plus pen knife jaws and convexing rod. For that extra $33 I would have received a set of ceramic/Arkansas stones. But in my case, they wouldn't have been used.

I suggest you do what I did. Make two columns and add up the cost of the basic kit plus accessories you want, then the deluxe kit plus accessories.

I put together a cart the the price for what i wanted was 10$ more the deluxe. I think im going to buy the deluxe with the convex rod since it comes with strop and more stones.( including 50 and 100 grit diamond) 50+ dollars you save sounds like a deal after i started adding all the things to the cart im getting all things id buy separate except the ceramic and Arkansas stones so im get that for free with the strop and base. So is that the website you bought it from?

The only thing I would add right off the bat with the basic diamond set would be the 100 grit and possibly the 50 grit diamond depending on the steels you will be working with. You will save a LOT of time when reprofileing. Other than that maybe an extra roo strop with some CBM emulsions. You can get silly sharp with the basic set.

I bought directly from the KME website.

I think the tipping point is whether you want only diamond hones or also want the stones. If you want stones, the deluxe kit is definitely the way to go.

Items like convex rod and pen knife jaws are not included with either kit, so are a wash in price.

Yeah was going to get the set $180, base $25, 50 grit $25, 100 grit $25, strop $19, 4 micron paste $19, and convex rod $19 For a total of $312. The deluxe kit includes all that except the convex rod, for about $7 more. Plus i would basically be getting four ceramic and the Arkansas stone, bottle honing oil, stone thickness compensator, and eleven grits for free.

Thanks anyways for the suggestions.

I just got mine last week. I got the basic kit and I'm really happy with it. If I was doing over again I would add the 100 grit diamond stone. The 1500 grit stone that it comes with will put a nice edge on. I think i've sharpened every knife in the house now and i'm impressed with it!
