Ive had and used the kme system for a while now and all has been good but tonight i had to sharpen my pm2 that still had the factory edge. While i was going through the paces I noticed that the sharpy right at the tip aling the edge wasnt coming off, i didnt think much of it and tried to correct it. When i finished on the 1500 grit stone and did a few passes on the strop it wouldnt shave hair and when cutting paper it was a really course cut. It wasnt gliding through like it usually does even though I know for a fact I was keeping the same angle. Im really frustrated with this and wanted to know if anyone can help me with this.

It sounds to me that you identified the problem (still had Sharpie on the edge), but didn't quite correct for it... and that you didn't quite apex the edge. Especially on a factory edge, there might be a bit of a steeper angle right at the edge from burr removal, or you may be sharpening at a slightly different angle... so you may have thought all the Sharpie was gone, but there might have been a slight amount at the edge, that can be hard to detect.

Drop down to a more coarse stone, and make sure you've properly apexed the edge = develop a burr on both sides, or check more closely for Sharpie (maybe under magnification)... then go back thru your sharpening procedure... and you should be good to go!

Ill give it a shot, thanks.

Look into a head magnifier. They aren’t expensive as other options are. Since I got mine, I don’t know why on earth I never had one in the beginning.

I should have added... if it's just the tip area causing you problems... you might need to adjust the position of the knife in the clamp too to get it closer to the rest of the blade... (in addition to what I suggested above).

Now, is there a reason why with coarser stones it works no problem but with finer stones, that is when i start having problems with the tip

I still think it could be related to what I wrote before. If you noticed that Sharpie wasn’t getting removed at the tip, then as you work thru the stones, if the tip area wasn’t properly apexed, it will “show itself” more on the finer stones (mainly because you’re not seeing the improvement you expect), but in reality it was a problem all along, just not noticed right away. Hope that makes sense.
