KMG attachment.....

Hi folks,

I've been trying to locate a fairly recent thread in which you all were comparing some of the attachments for the KMG. Thus far, I've had no success in finding it. The particular attachment I'm looking for is the one that attaches to the tool arm and looks like a simple shaft that points (nearly touches) right into the flat platen. It's supposed to help with keeping the hand steady during bevel grinding.

Can someone point me to this thread, as well as explain how to fabricate this custom piece?

Many thanks,

Thanks Sweany. It's a little hard to see where/how it's attached to the KMG. Do you have any plans on how to go about building this attachment?

Thanks a lot,
Dana

for not being a knifemaker, that water quenched 5160 blade looks like a pretty nice
piece to me, and those hawks  wow!

Sorry Sweaney. I was looking through the blacksmith gallery and thought I was looking
just at your pictures. I saw the one pciture of HWoolridge's Two Hour knife and thought
you were the writer. I can see now from the picture of the grinding jig that I was WAY off
course.

Thanks,
Dana

I think Alan L did the hawks.

The rest I built is just a piece of 1/2" bar with the 7/8" strut rod welded to it
The collar/sprocket hub is notched out so it fits almost to the belt. You set your angle by the length of the collar from the belt. Thr rod makes is easy to follow the curve of the blade.

the one in the pic is just bolted to the benchtop. I wasn't sure I was going to like it, so I didn't take the time to fabricate it to fit the toolling arm.

I like the strut rod's cause they are casehardened mild steel you still weld them , but you don't have to mess with heat treat. And you can pick one up from almost any auto shop.

That's a great idea. I'll start looking for some strut rod material and see what I can come up with for my setup. I've got my vent for my filtration system right under my wheel/platen and will have to figure another method for attaching it.

Thanks again,
Dana

attachment to the tooling arm is opitmal i think . I just didn't go to the trouble.

dust builds up on the arm cunder the platen., comeing in from the side would eliminate that problem.

I have some strut rods you can have em for shipping.
