KMG / Clone grinder with international shipping?

Hi Guys,

I will be looking to purchase a new grinder within the next couple of months. I was set on a KMG with variable 3hp motor but unfortunately just found out that Beaumont Metal Works doesn't ship internationally.

The no-weld grinder kit at USA knife supply is the same deal, no international shipping.

Shipping would likely be almost as much as the cost of the grinder but that's our punishment for living in Australia..

Does anyone else carry KMG grinders and parts?

The NWG looks like the next logical step but what worries me is if I need the KMG parts/tools that attach to it I won't be able to get them shipped over so I'll end up with a grinder and not the attachments to suit it.

Can anyone offer some alternative suggestions?

Cheers,
Steve

What about the no weld grinder plans or kit? You can get the kit and finish it up yourself if you're handy.......Or you could just buy the plans for cheap. Do you have access to parts like wheels and such?

G'day Steve,

I am looking at the Blindhogg grinder from Polar Bear Forge. I am currently waiting on a Water Jet company in Wangara getting back to me on a price. Jamie can post the kit to Perth(Polar Bear Forge) for $380 USD. I rekon for around $1000 AUD I could get one up and running. Otherwise I will look at a radius master.

You can still buy the KMG from Beaumont.

Several of their customers use a freight forwarding service that handles customs brokerage and freight forwarding from a destination in US.

usa knifemaker also ships using this service, so if you want to build rather than buy, you can source your parts from there to build a kmg clone, or No Weld Grinder

I did look at this - but getting all the tools and components to fit the grinder I make when the maker of those components doesn't ship internationally may be an issue (for some parts).

Hi Matt I remember you were looking at grinders when we last spoke. I like the kit from Polar Bear Forge and the price is right, but as I mentioned the only problem I see is getting all the attachments etc that go with it. We can make the chassis but it's pointless without the rest of the gear.
** Just looking at usaknifemaker it looks like although the grinder can't be shipped over, the contact wheels etc don't have the same "no international shipments" disclaimer... I'll have to check it out and confirm.
As long as we can get wheels and a platen we should be sweet.

This could be an option. I'll have to email Rob again and see what he's comfortable with. It would be easier to get everything (motor and all) shipped from Beaumont Metal Works.. I like the KMG, it has nothing but great reviews... Big $$ but I'll be doing this for decades so I'd rather spend once and spend right without having to compromise and risk needing an upgrade in the future.

I'll look into everything and let you know how it pans out.

Cheers all

If I were local to either of those businesses, I'd go pick it up in person and ship it over to you, and I'd be happy with $20 for my trouble.
Maybe there's someone on the forum who can do that for you? Act as an informal forwarding service?

There was a discussion on a forum, started by Rob; which brought the service to Tracy's attention.

Rob noticed that two addresses were familiar as they were used repeatedly.
He found that it was for this forwarding service.

I looked , but didn't find that thread, but likely on Knife Dogs...

Have you looked at the RadiusMaster that is available locally, you could always pop around and see mine if you like.

Richard

Steve,
Im home this weekend. Ive got a KMG and a Radius Master and will be in the US in Nov. I can probably sort something for you if yo contact me.
Cheers Bruce

Cheers for the help everyone,

It looks more and more like I'll be able to get something sorted out within the next couple of months. I see that Texas Knife (who shipped me my Evenheat oven) have the Bader as well so that could even be an option since I know they ship internationally.

MSCantrell - that's really generous of you mate and I'm sure given the great community here someone closer would offer but it sounds like one of the freight forwarding companies mentioned would work just fine. I'll have to check with Rob and see how it's worked for him in the past. It may all fall easily into place.

Richard - I have seen the radius master, but not in use. How do you find it? I am running a coote grinder on a single speed setup at the moment which uses 72" belts so I was hoping to stick with the same just in case I decide to keep both grinders... I am really chasing a variable speed setup this time around though.

Matt: Looks interesting, definitely keen to check out the pics when you get them. Do you know if it's variable speed, I didn't see it on their site??

Bruce: I didn't realise you had the KMG, I'll be in touch as I'd really like to see one in the flesh. Thanks again for the offer to come and visit. We can chat more then

Hey Steve,

Got a 3d drawing today. Looks pretty good. Has three wheels, runs 2" x 96" belts (apparently Norton make them as there common size?)

Around $1300-$1500. With variable speed control and a few extras $2290.

Email me if you want the attachment mattbrook (at) pgrs com au

Matt

For a extra AU$600.00 you can get the variable speed Radiusmaster, I only have the single speed one, very versatile plus I like that I can wheel it outside when grinding , much less dust in the shop. You are welcome to try it out.

Richard

Matt, sent you a message, thanks mate.

Richard: I didn't realise they had a variable speed setup.. very interesting. Am I right that they only make the machine to fit 2x42 belts though? I could have missed this in the info I was reading.
How do you find belt life/cost? Do you flat grind on it much?

Lots of flat grinding done on it, belts are 2" x 48".
good quality belts last quite long but I normally take a new belt for a new blade and keep the older ones for finishing or ruff shaping later.

Richard

You would be surprised at the cost of shipping Steve, I shipped a motorcycle from Toronto Canada to Perth last March ( about 2 cubic meters) for $550 Australian.

Of course it went by sea and took a little over 2 months but it got there undamaged.

George

The KMG is a better machine, as is the Bader III. Not to mention the Burr-King 960.

There are a good reasons these three grinders are used in just about all of the top Makers Shops.

Not to self promote, and as for international sales, I've only shipped to US and Canada, but you may want to check out my TW-90.

Sorry i'm late getting back to this.
George; thanks for the shipping info. Good to know what a bike costs to send overseas too ;)

Travis; your grinder looks really interesting. Does it take the same size tooling arms as the kmg?
I cant see a price on your website.. Am i just missing it?

Cheers
