I'm real interested in making a base for my KMG that will enable me to flip it on it's side and use it as a horizontal grinder. It's a big bastard and I'm wondering how people are managing to get it done. I know there have been threads about this in the past but I'm trying to get a fresh and comprehensive look at this.

So does anyone have plans(too optimistic, I know) for a setup like this? Anyone manage to do this in an "easy" way?

Should I just say the hell with it and get a Beaumont Horizontal EF-48 and be done with it?

JG, I built a Polar Bear Forge grinder in horizontal mounting for about $1000. Here is a short video of the machine. The video is my first try so it is a little shaky . Larry

Looks like you did a nice job. Couldn't really tell in the video, but there doesn't seem to be a great deal of clearance for the motor fan when the grinder is horizontal? I'd recommend cutting an appropriate sized hole in your table for air circulation when the motor is on the side.

I can't load videos for some reason but if you check my IG they are on there for what I did. I basically just built a table without a top, then used a steel round bar as a pivot mounted under the table top that lets me flip the whole grinder base on its side. The angles were controlled by a second pipe in the vertical position and 2x4 shims in the horizontal. It works really well. You just have to make sure you have clearance for the belt tracks etc.

Andrew, I mounted the whole grinder such that the motor fan shroud is a good inch off the table just so I wouldn't have to have a big hole in the table. There is plenty of air circulation. You just mount the base of the grinder where you want to provide as much clearance as you want. If you go too far though the motor and grinder will be harder to tilt. This works really well. Larry

Ah, I couldn't tell from the pics if it was almost touching, or had some clearance.

I just did a quick search on youtube and the first 5 videos are related to this subject. Here's the search link: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=kmg+grinder+horizontal

Here is the one I was actually looking for though that I remember watching a while ago. I think it's pretty similar to Pittknife's set up.:

Apparently this guy sells a kit for "less than $500".. There are also quite a few more details in the video description on youtube if you're curious:

Yeah, I've seen all those videos. I've read a lot and seen a lot on this subject before starting this thread. I was more or less just looking for some detailed pics of setups people had.

Thanks for the info gents, I appreciate it. I have a couple ideas I'm gonna try out and I'll report back.

I think an extremely simply solution is to buy four big T-style shaft supports - 35 or 40mm or the imperial equivalent. Bolt two to the bottom of the grinder. Bolt two to a base or stand. Run a shaft through all four shaft supports, and you have a huge precision hinge that can be locked in any rotational position.

Something like this but with two more shaft supports.

Sparrow way is simply the best

I guess the main issue for me now is the mounting location of the motor and vfd. Hmmm...

I think your guys are right about the above setup. That looks to be the way to go
