Okay you guys have talked me in to a KMG grinder and now I would like to ask what accessories or features you would choose or are already using that you love. I am going to go with variable speed should I go 1.5 or 2 H.P., 8" or 10" contact wheel, serated or plain. What else should I order with the grinder? Thanks in advance.

Go with as much power and accessories as you can afford. I would say for starters the 8" serrated wheel, flat platen, and 2hp variable speed.

If you want to add accessories and have the cash, then various wheels and rotary platen are great to have. I am a Bader guy myself, but I plan to get a rotary platen from Rob real soon.

Buy a big smooth wheel if you are going to hollow grind and get a small (3") serated wheel for hogging profiles.

I perfer the smooth wheel for knifemaking. The serrated wheels certainly cut faster while trading a nice surface finish with finishing J-weight belts like 220+. The smooth wheels have a superior finish. Knifemaking really doesn't require speedy material removal....so get the smooth face. If you need to cut faster, use a coarser grit and faster speed.

Of course....there are success stories on both sides of the smooth-serrated fence. This is just my opinion and personal preference.

Extra money should go into the motor. Bigger is better!

The small wheel attachment is a wonderful tool! (sales pitch...sorry :o )

Sincerely,
Rob

Listen to de man! Robs suggestions mirror mine and I fully agree w/ the small wheel attachment too, handier than a gun in a dark tavern full of loggers on Friday nite.

ROFLMAO! You silver tongued devil!

You can never have too much power. I wish I had 3hp. Make sure you go variable speed.
