Do you all think a 3/4 hp 1725 leeson will have enough power for this? I can get that for 190, or a Dayton 1hp for 225.

Check with surplus center first Michael on prices. I think you can do better.

I dont know what HP most guys are running on those things , but better to have too much than not enough HP.

But I can bog my 2 hp , I'm a beast on motors.

bog down 2 horsies? Finesse Mark, finesse. :D

I checked out SC, and they have a 1 hp for 146, but not sure of the brand and with shipping, not sure if it would be worth it.

One thing you may want to consider Michael,

I used a heavy cord coming from my VFD with a female plug on the end. I made up a little box with a rheostat and a switch with plug on it also. The control wiring is tied onto the heavy power cord that goes back to the VFD. That way I can run anything with the the one controller. Just plug it into whatever needs power, jsu put a male plug on the motor.

I can vouch for the 3 phase motors from SC. So far so good anyway.

Michael, what is a horizontal grinder used for? I always assumed they were used for grinding profiles. Sorry for the lame question.

yup, that is pretty much it. Finishing the profile and contouring the handle so everything is nice, even and purty. ;)

Michael, I run a 1 h.p. vfd/3 phase motor package on mine that I paid $282 for...spend the extra few dollars and get variable speed...

My only problem is that I just want to run 115 on the motor. I just set up a VFD on the KMG (vertical) and that uses up my 220 (as will an oven when I get one). I know motors are expensive, but they can also be used later down the road on other pieces of machinery.

I see...but just as food for thought...how often will you be running the KMG and the horizontal grinder at the same time? Split the 220V in a junction box and run them both off of the same circuit...that's what I did...

:)

I'm not sure how much I will be using them at the same time, but I can't really put them close together and if I do split the 220, the other half will have to be used for the oven when I get it.

I'd say that the 1hp @ 1725rpm is good to go as far as being enough power, Mike. I'd go with a Dayton motor, but beware they aren't what they used to be, and many are now made in China. They sold us out and went overseas for their labor just like Wilton did. Bastids. :(

You would go with the 1 hp Dayton at 225 over the 3/4 leeson at 190? I'm getting ready to pick one of them up today and wanted to make sure. :D

split??

are you understanding 220 mike?
if you look in your box you'll see all 220 is , is two 110's, the double pole 220 breaker is just two breakers tied together and taking one 110 from each side of your line in,, the 110 's are just at a different polarity , for lack of a better word for it..used together will give you 220..

so you are splitting the box anyway.. every other breaker down the same side of the box is one side of the 220, which is 110,

I'd go 3 ph, the motors are much cheaper..and you have the controller set up anyway right? just run a leader like mark said or hard wire it. I have 3, 3 ph motors running from mine now.. :)

I run the Baldor 11/2 hp. farm duty, @235.00. I run on a 110 circuit. This is a fully inclosed motor , which is a must for the knife shop. I used a 1hp, before this and found it did not have enough power for the hogging parts. Just me, Fred
