Hello friends,

I am looking to purchase a dc motor for a kmg grinder,i have decided that i should go with variable speed for the obvious versatility, and that 1.5 or 2 hp should do it,what is your advice on the brand, where to get it,i have looked at Rob's
site,but its over $800,baldor is a good name,but also very expensive,so i thought i would ask you guys,thank you
Marc

I recently finished my Grinder from KMG and I went with a 1.5HP Leesom Farm Duty (Item 110918). It goes 1725 RMP and if you use the 6" wheel you can double that speed. My Motor was $249.60 from Winans Inc

I also went with a KBAC-27 controller. It works great but comes with no On/Off swith or fittings to keep it water/dust proof. you have to buy them extry. My KBAC was $340.01 from State Electric. The extra switch and the wire plug fittings will set you back another $40 I got the model that runs single phase 110V from the wall and 3 phase to the motor. You can get a 3 phase 220V input model if you like, but I wanted to be able to move my machine around and not worry about finding 220V

Howerver this set up rocks! I love it and it is easy to work with. If you get carried away you'll be making expensive toothpicks allday...

Thanks Chris for your imput,i do want to use 110 single phase,is there any place that
carries the motor and speed controller in one unit?
I am not sure i understand what you said about using the 6" wheel and double the speed,
I thought that with KMG grinder the speed was constant no matter the wheel size?
iI was planing on using a 10" wheel and also the flat platen attachment for my starting set up,what do you think?

I was not able to find the motor and controller at the same place. I was looking for specific pieces and was also low price shopping.

As for the 6" wheel I'm refering to the drive wheel that attaches to the shaft that is driven by the motor. The grinder comes with a 4" wheel here, but an upgrade to a 6" drive wheel effectively doubles your top belt speed or so I've been told. Look on Robs site, it explains it.

For your grinding wheel I would go for the 10", I went with an 8" and wish I would have got the 10". Definately get the Flat Platen and get a tool arm for both or you will be spending more time bolting and unbolting parts than grinding.

Make sure you order the Controller mounting bracket too, the grinder doesn't come with this and I recommend it or you will have your controller just sitting on the table somewhere.

I also got the heavy steel base to bolt everything on to. It makes a nice package when all together and running, but it's a heavy SOB.

Hope this helps, you will love the grinder!

The controller Chis mentioned is a good one that Rob sells and is available from other places. You plug it into single phase, but it drives a 3 ph motor. It might be hard to get the vfd controller locally, but the motor should be easier to track down. Check the yellow pages to see if you have an electric motor rewinding shop. They have or can order the motors, and might have a bargain used one laying around. I got my controller from Rob. It was a bit more, but complete and customer support to go with it. Go for the 2 hp/220v if you can.

Good luck, Craig

I'm not sure how much Rob is asking for the controller, but the part about it being complete is a BONUS! I have to wait 2 weeks for my on/off switch and the grommets used to keep the cord holes sealed properly. Oh and by the way that damn switch cost $20+ shipping and the grommet kit cost the same. So with shipping it cost me an extra $60 and some change plus the wait!!!

Make sure you get a TEFC motor, farm duty is best and I recommend Leeson.

Thank you guys,I will start looking into locating a TEFC motor.unfortunatly 220 is not
an option for me,but i will see if i can find a motor that works on both 110/220 in case
i move in the future and can switch over to 220.
Hey Graig,i see we're kinda neighbor, different island. So you did find your motor locally?
the shipping charges to bring stuff out here are sure steep.
Chris, did you get the small wheel attachment, and do you know of other places where
you can get contact wheels cheaper that will fit the kmg?
thanks all for your info, very appreciated
Marc

edited to ask,is 1800 rpm a good speed for this motor?

Well,i just talk to a rep,he said that i could not put a speed controler on a single phase
motor,since i only have 110 for now,he said i needed a 3 phase motor????
what is your take on this?
Thanks
Marc

That is correct about the motor. The controller allows you to use a 3 phase motor on 110V Single Phase AC. I am using a 3 phase motor on 110V Single phase right now.

Tha KBAC-27 can be used with 110 or 220 VAC input. On 110 VAC you can't go any higher than a 1.5HP 3 phase motor.

I couldn't afford a small wheel attachment when i made my purchase. It will be the next item I buy, I wish I had it now.

I have not looked much for a supply of contact wheels, the only thing I have seen is someone using a Grizzly 10" wheel and they had to have bearings installed proffesionally. I think they still saved some money though.
