Fed Ex Just Delivered My Rotoray Platen For My Kmg Today. I Am Getting Ready To Grind My 2nd Blade This Weekend Out Of Cpm S30v. I Plan To Make An All Around The Kitchen Knife. If I Use The Rotory Platen With The Rotory Belt Adjusted Tight Will I Be Able To Get A Real Mild Convex Grind On The Blade? The Stock I Am Useing Is 1 Inch Wide.

Tim, play around with it a bit to get used to the feel. Rotate to all the positions and mess around with the tightening/loosening of tension.
It should do a fine job for what you intend.

With the tension tight, and the smallest space,it is almost like a flat platen.Like Kit says, play with it on some scrap mild steel.

Holy Smokes! That got there fast! I just sent it!

Either you love those FedEx guys or you Hate 'em. Today, I'm feeling the love.:)

Thank you Tim!

Rob, I sure hope you didn't send my boxes FedEx Pony Express. I can hardly wait for my early Christmas present. Tuesday isn't that far off.

What I've found that works to get the "flatest" convex grind is fresh belts and light pressure. The latter is kinda hard to do since I'm always trying to overcome my normal production method, but it's the key for me. I'm always leary to tighten the belt too much since I'm so cheap; I want to preserve its strength as much as I can so the tension on my rotary platen is kinda in the middle...

Ray, I think your stuff went our the same day as Tim's. But your's is MUCH heavier!!:D and will arrive in 3 boxes by FedEx ground. Help the poor driver when he arrives. He'll probably try to carry it by himself...the poor bastid!! (hee hee)

Sorry for the hijack Tim.....back on the topic:

With some experiementing. You'll find an appropriate tension. You'll notice that the tighter the belt and the faster it runs...the hotter it gets. It's designed to run at 180F continous...which is pretty warm. I've rarely seen any worn out belts.

Well, I'm mad at myself for buying the dang rotary platen.....

Now that I have everyone's attention, I'll finish the sentence.

Well, I'm mad at myself for buying the dang rotary platen a few months ago, instead of when I first ordered my KMG. It's a key attachment for me. I love convex, and find that using the rotary platen I have tons more control than before.
Yep, all of Rob's stuff is heavy, one reason I really like it.

Our German Shepherd Is Black/tan And Really Big, Very Scary Looking. Fed Ex Man Called Me On My Cell Phone Said He Could Not Get Out Of Truck Or Crack The Door And Slip Package On The Ground. I Begged Him To Give Me A Couple Of Minutes To Get Someone There To Put Him In The Garage But He Said He Could Not Wait, So I Explained To Fed Ex Man That The Dog (harley) Would Bite A Hole In The Van Tire When He Tried To Leave So He Waited About Three Minutes For Rescue. Thanks For The Fast Shipment Rob, Everything Was Packaged Very Well Also. Have Not Used It Yet But I Have The Weekend Off. Thanks Again....tim Frost
