i have a kmg and a 2 hp single phase motor. i always see the motor mounted in front of the kmg pulleys. is it a bad idea to mount it behind the pulley? because i want to save space at the front of my bench.

I have seen them mounted under to worktop on a hinge the belt going through a slot cut for the belt. That would give you more space

IMO the motors are usually mounted in front of the pulleys so that the fan of the motor pushes the steel powder away from the motor itself. if you mount the motor behind the pulleys your motor will go out of order sooner.
I decided to mount mine under the workbench AND in front of the pulleys.

i dont understand the steel pushing thing. im more concerned in terms of power and function. will a rear setup impede the grinders working ability?

Where ever you decide to mount it, in front..under..or to the rear, won't affect the performance at all. Just be sure to have the proper tension on the belt and have the pulley's inline and you'll be fine.

I think the main reason why you see the motors mounted in front it because of the base plate Beumont offers for the motor, grinder, and controller. Making it all a one unit.

That and mounting it in front makes it easier to reach the belt and change speeds a little quicker. Other that that, I see no reason not to mount it in the back.

Ruin the motor? Not a nema-4 rated motor. They are dust protected. If our friend in Italy is not using a NEMA 4 (sealed case) rated motor, it doesn't' matter where you mount it. The magnets in the motor will eventually pull enough steel dust into the motor to fry it. Period.

I agree. Most motors used in grinder applications of the type we're building are TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) type motors. Dust isn't an issue if that's the case. I'd say mount it below the work top with a hinge setup for tension, or behind if you have room back there. I mounted mine in front because I have the base plate for the KMG and that's where the mounting holes are. :)

An additional note about TEFC motors.

Yes they are sealed...and yes they are fan cooled. But.......
While the motor windings are sealed from any dust, the fan is exposed to the grinding dust. It is pulled through the blades and the fan housing ( on the back end of the motor). This can clog the fan and make the motor overheat. ALL TEFC motors should be regularly vacuumed and the fan housing blown out .Dust that collects on the motor housing needs to be vacuumed/blown off, too.The motor shell/casing is what radiates the heat away. If you don't clean the motor , you will shorten the life. With regular maintenance, a TEFC motor will last a very long time.
