I Ordered a KMG-8 today with hopes that this will speed up the learning curve(b/c great tools always help). I really hate rust so My question is should I take it apart as soon as it arrives and blue it or paint it. It would seem that paint could cause problems with fit up? Also Is there a lot to disasemble? It looks simple from the pic's but I've never seen one in person. Thanks for any imput....

I just got mine set up and running tonight. Doesn't look like you should have any fitting problems if you painted it. Disassembly doesn't look like it'd be that bad either.

I've done two. I think they need paint, but didn't go all the way to complete disassembly. I removed the drive wheel assembly, then disassembled the tracking assembly and tension wheel arm. I left the main body assembled and painted it all with Hammerite paint. Hammerite paint is reinforced with glass fibers and with a few coats provides a tough protective layer for your machine.

Some guys just let em rust......

I painted the frame on mine with hammerite paint, too. Stripped it completely down. Remember to measure the protrusion of the tracking knob thru the arm that is on the spring. That way you will be able to put it back at approximately the same location and tracking won't be too far off.
But I cold blued the tooling arm because I thought that paint would get scrapped off and I already had the blueing.

Also, where the upper arm swivels at bolt in the back with the bolt. That is somewhat of a tight fit, so some of the paint may get scrapped off.

Just make sure as you put it back together that all the pieces are square to one another.

I think paint will give you more protection from rust. And fairly easy to get back together.

I just let mine rust....every month or so, if theres any actual surface rust of any kind (usually from drippings and wet grinding), I take a scotchbrite pad and it comes right off. I actually used some mothers mag polish on it and that will protect it. When I move next, I have plans to paint mine matte black, and name it.

Why worry about paint. If its anything like mine there's enough dust on it you could never tell it wasn't painted. :D

I use T-T's technique. If you make it look to pretty you might spend to much time keeping it clean instead of making knives. Fred:jerkit:
