I got a couple sets of scale material from Chuck Leake last year and have been holding off until I got enough experience to try it. I love this stuff and will be using more of it when possible. When I learn more about properly thinning ivory to the proper thicknesses I may be able to retain more of the bark about the handle length. This particular set had some surface cracks in the bark and I kinda liked that.

I like s30v too and chose it for this knife because the owner will use it in high humidity (southern Florida). Hope it does well. The blade tested at 58 RC and I included a deep cryo in the treatment.

Hope it passes the peer test. Please take a look: http://riflestocks.tripod.com/pics9.html

Thanks; Roger

Roger!

Slow down and let me catch up;). You're getting way ahead on craftsmanship.

That is sweet!

Roger, Thats your best yet IMHO..Love the scales. Once you go IVORY its hard to go back Ya know.

Josh guys, thanks. I feel like making another better one now (I hope). I do appreciate all your kindness and also know I can always fall back on all you for advise in doing things better.

Chuck,

We can make a good deal. Email me if you're serious.

Got to hit the sack. Turkey hunting tomorrow. Three-twenty in the morn is not far away.

Love ya all.

Super, Roger! Did you stabilize the scales? I also have some, but haven't been brave enough to try it. You must of worked hard to get that S30V shining like that...

Bob

Dang Roger you haven't made enough knives to be doing work like that!! Beautiful, and a nice job tapering that tang. I hope your customer gives you some good feedback on the steel; where'd you have it heat treated?

I want one by moose season this fall. I will pick out some wild ivory for it.I need to get one before you get famous and I cant afford it.
Chuck

Great-looking knife -- it's shiny enough for me to see you taking a picture of it!

Chuck,

Great. You can pay me in ivory. Okay?? I will look forward to starting that knife. I will also be a bit nervous throughout its making because this one will have to be special.

All you guys are great for me. I never have to worry about getting good and varied advise based on experience.

Bob, I did not do anything to the ivory except shape, sand finish and buff. I am not experienced working ivory from any critter. I hope I have not missed a critical step. AND - my work does not yet compare with yours. You are kind to me.

Dave, I do my own heat treat on all steels I have used and hopefully all others I may use. I had the blade Rockwell tested by Douglas Barrel. I live only a couple miles from them.

S30V Finish: After all heat treat the blade was belt finished to 800 grit. After basically finishing the knife I hand sanded, using a rubber eraser as a sanding block, to 1000, 1200, and 1500, then buffed with black compound followed with green compound. I tweeked the heat teat on this S30V from what I had done before and I believe the better heat treat made a large difference in sanding and buffing (I posted that HT recipie here about a couple weeks ago - search for 's30v HT sample'). This time the camera caught the blade about the way it really looks when it is tilted just right in order to see all the scratches. As you can see, S30V does not give them up without a fight.
