The customer is a collector and he only asked me to do two things: make it from top notch materials and it should hold an edge. Except for that I had freedom to choose. Bruce Bump was kind enough to hammer a wonderful bar of 460 layer ladder damascus for me. I got the tri-color mokume from Mike Sakmar (sure wish it would show up in the photo) and the brown bark ivory came from Chuck Leake. The trick was to etch the tang without staining the ivory but once I got going it turned out a lot less difficult than I had thought.

She is 9 7/8 inches and the blade is 5 1/8 inches. Thanks for looking.

Go Rodger!!!!!!
That is gorgeous, The materials are all top notch and you did a splendid job making the knife. I can't imagine anyone not being delighted to receive that!

AAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++++
Better n a Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock! ;)

sub-creditBruce, you outdid your usual super job on that damascus!

Bruce went to a lot of hard work to make that fantastic ladder. I think I was more afeared of letting him down than I was the customer.

Thank fellows. I need to get in touch with Tess Neilson about a sheath.

That's beautiful as always Roger! I don't see your mark? You need to take credit for work like this!

Thanks again guys. That was a nice couple slabs of ivory to work with. I only found one small crack in it as I tapered it down. Other than that both are soilid which made it a whole lot easier to etch the tang without getting resist stains in the ivory.

Hey J.,

I sent Tess an email last evening. Did it get there?

RL

Yep, Roger, she got it. You've got her thinking too. I guess she wanted to put some thought into it before replying.

Roger, what can I say? You did it again, another GREAT one! You really did Bruce's steel justice, fella. Both thumbs up for you, Roger!

I love it! Beutiful combination, and who knowes, before long we'll have you pounding hot steel too!

I just recently got ahold of some mammoth ivory and was wondering is there any special way to work it?

Thanks

Roger, Dave brought up a good question about your name on it? Its easy to mark the damascus just before the etch and can be covered with nail polish in a nice oval design.

Dave and Bruce,

Just a bit embarressed to say this but I did etch the mark. I decided to do something cute and inlay it with 23K gold. Failure. It etched away. Must have undercut it. Maybe the maker etch wasn't deep enough. So, I guess there is always next time :( .

Good lookin' blade Roger. One of your best. Curves are all very ... fitting. I really like that one.
