This is my first stainless blade, and the first I've finished using my homemade grinder. I've discovered a nice grinder not only works really well, but also saves a boatload of time :) However, I lost track of the hours I spent on this. I have three more of the same design I'm working on finishing. The plan was to have them done for a reunion over the 4th, but I'm out of time. This one's for my father.

My idea was to make small, lightweight blades to be taken along when my dad backpacks and when my brothers go flyfishing. They're going to end up bigger than what I suspected they were, but it's still a nice size.

Here are the specs:

ATS-34 blade, treated by Paul Bos (thanks Paul), hand finished, tapered tang.
Nickel Silver pins and lanyard hole.
OD Green Canvas Micarta and Red Liners.

I have yet to add my mark, bevel the ID of the lanyard hole, and mark the blade.

My observations:

--I really like the sharp inside corners where your fingers lay but they are a b***h to finish.

--When installing the laynard tube when you epoxy, be sure to get all the epoxy out of the bore!

--The handle looks thicker than I wanted it to, but it fits really well in my smallish hands.

The pics aren't the best, I shot them in hurry over lunch today. They'll have to do for now.

I'd like to thank Steve Kraft from my hometown for his help in getting me started in this hobby a couple of years ago. Also, this forum has been an absolute gold mine for me, but if I tried to thank every person who has helped me, directly, or indirectly, in some way, I'd run out of time. Thanks BF!

Please, please, please tell me what you do and don't like about this knife.

John,

Thanks for posting your fourth knife. Congratulations!
I am still gathering info before I make my first. (read: lurker) :p

Your blade profile is very appealing. I like the gentle curve of the spine. I like the ratio of handle to blade, but some might find the blade too short. That said, the blade length seems well suited for its intended use.

Lately I have been paying more attention to the location of pins on handles. Was the pin placement on this knife determined by function or looks? I think the way that the pins are laid out draws attention to them. Was that your intention?

You did a really nice job of finishing the blade and handles. I imagine it took you quite a bit of time. I imagine your father will be delighted with the knife. If not, send it to me!
