Last night I was putting backs onto shelving units. It was 1/8" double-tempered hardboard. I cut one a little fat but didn't notice until after I'd attached it, so I tried cutting it down with a flush-cut saw, which got it close, but not quite, and pretty rough. So out came the pocket knives.
The Schrade Sharpfinger, though shaving-sharp, wasn't very good at edge-planing the double-tempered hardboard.
The Ken Onion Tactical Blur, however, was great. For this application, I think it was the straight edge that made all the difference. I'm pretty sure my block plane, which is supposed to be made for this kind of thing, wouldn't have done it nearly as well.
My question is: Is this knife abuse? If it is, then I can say I enjoy abusing knives. Anyone else find their EDC knives useful in the shop?
