knife alternative??

So, I'm heading to Washington DC this Monday. I've spent a fair amount of time there and am familiar with the knife laws. What I'm not so familiar with is the rules for the museums. I am not taking a knife (insert weeping and gnashing of teeth). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a knife alternative. Preferably one that won't be confiscated. I'm thinking I will take my Gerber shard. It's clearly a tool, no blade, I can open pesky packaging with it, and it fits in my pocket. Any thoughts?

I haven't had any problem at all with a small SAK or Leatherman tool. I go into the Smithsonian, the National Gallery Of Art, most federal buildings with them. Last week I spent a good deal of time in some federal building and carried my Leatherman Micra with no hassle at all.

My "downtown" carry.

I would think a micra, or even a sak classic or mini swiss champ (I think that is the small 2 sided one) should be ok, if not basically overlooked.
for the sak, go with the red scales, the alox might draw a little more scrutiny, while the regular red one should be the most sheeple friendly, or any Small keychain sized multitool similar to the micra.

No, I'm not kidding.
Dummy corded to my belt loop daily.
But cord has since been changed to black paracord type 1.

How good is the little Gerber? I've been considering getting a couple of them for keychains and stuff like that but it seems too small to be useful.

I love those Sears four way screwdrivers, I've had one of those and a P-51 on my keychain since I've carried a keychain.:D

For a bit over $9.00 it works great, usage for me: Slicing open typical plastic clam shell packaging like butter, opening a box in a second without having to use a knife... which twice on occasion in the past the knife blade penetrated the box deeper then planed and cut into an area of the contents.
It's very sharp right out of the package, and has a liner lock and detente ball.
Was easily worth 9 bucks.. a small mighty mite.

The Sear's 4-way and a P-38 are part of my every where EDC set up. Carry them in my wallet, and they both go thru TSA security with no problem. I've also carried the Northwoods stockman in D.C.wth no problem. Just use some common sense and you'll be okay. Contrary to a lot of opinions, pocket knives are not illegal in D.C.

I found a Leatherman Style PS that has pliers, tweezers file, bottle opener/clip and scissors. No blade, so it is TSA complaint. The clip is useless. I lost my first one because the gate was so flimsy. I now have the new one on a small fob with a snap clip.

I have one of those little Gerbers. Mine is not the easiest to open or close. The blade is a bit thick. I find a Spyderco Bug easier to use. The Bug is less bulky and lighter.

Honestly, you could carry a small SAK, or a small slip joint that you carry in the bottom of your pocket, I don't see any issue with either of those ideas.

Just as long as it is not to mean looking you can actually carry almost any kind of pocket knife you want into the Smithsonian etc. As has been pointed out above pocket knives are not illegal in DC. I live 10 minutes south of DC in northern Va and am pretty familiar with the city. Ive gone through metal detectors at the Fairfax County courthouse with my SAK One Armed Trekker, the guards didnt even give it a second look. Now had I have brought my ZT 0301 with me instead that would have raised some eyebrows. Hell I am actually pretty confident I could take my on the large side Kershaw Piston almost anywhere in the city

On a visit last winter, I carried... a congress. :D No problems at any museums.
