I'm in the process of putting together 5 BOB kits for Family and friends. I need some suggestions on a good knife and multi tool. I use a Al Mar Sere for myself but I need to keep costs down for them. As far below $100 in total would be great. Also I am planning on getting them the Fiskars Power Axe 14 in so I don't need to duplicate those functions.

Thanks,

AMV

If you want a fixed blade knife, I would suggest a Frosts Mora Clipper. Clippers are light, very inexpensive and have blades just under the <4” NYC legal limit.

If you are looking for folders, I would recommend a Spyderco Delica or Endura 4….or one of the Salts.

My current favorite full sized multitool is the Leatherman Core, so that’s the one I would choose.

I agree that a Mora would be a good choice for a fixed blade. Good steel and inexpensive. Depending on whether the BOBs will be more for Wilderness stay or Urban survival, a Victorinox SAK or basic Leatherman tool are hard to beat. Price wise, the SAK would be the best choice. A bit of warning, don't buy the cheaper knockoffs of multi-tool or SAK. They are inferior tools that inexperienced users would be better off without.

Are the people that will be receiving these kits experienced in survival at all? If not, you may want to offer some courses in basic survival training for them. Having the tools is only a small part of being prepared.

Are you looking for a fixed blade and multitool or a folder and multitool?

I'm open to either. Though I think a fixed blade might be easier for my mother to figure out! :-)

What size range? Blade size? Weight? Sheath style? What would you expect them to use it for, that might be more helpful. Would they need to be chopping and such, or just cutting chores? For a qualtiy folder, go to wallmart and get the spyerco native. Alot of fuss has been raised about wallmart selling them but I bought one and can tell you that they did not sacrifice qualilty, and they are selling under $40. I would also recomend a Swiss army knife(sak) which could be the multi tool. I carry a Gerber, very nice and can be opened with one hand unlike leathermans. You cant go wrong with a Leatherman or Gerber as far as multi tools. As for the fixed blade need to know more of what you need before making a suggestion.

I have no weight, size or sheath style requirement. They will most likely not be used for heavy chopping since I'm suppling an axe in the kit. I do want to keep the kit light so the Frosts Mora Clipper does appeal to me.

Basically it's a small (using the Country Com G5 bag) get out of NYC kit for my Brother, Father, Mother and G-friend. None are skilled at survival in the wilderness, though my mother is a nurse. My assumption (I know... you never know) is that if something happens at most we'll have to fend for ourselves, in a wilderness environment for a day or 2.

I don't know about your mom, but I do know mine. A kitchen knife would be my mom's best bet. Something she knows how to use!
