as of now i still suck at sharpening and have made it my quest to perfect this.
im sure somewhere this has already been talked about ,but till i get good at judging the angles by hand and sight. what tool or method would be good to use to help me find and keep the right angle while sharpening. thanks for any help

I'm thinking, buy a protractor and cut a piece of cardboard to your desired angle. Then use the cardboard as an angle guide. When you've figured out the distance that the spine on your knife must be from the stone to get the appropriate angle, then you can work on keeping a constant distance between the spine and the stone surface while working your edge on the stone.

Take two quarters out of your pocket, stack one on top of the other, and put them on your stone. Place the spine of your knife blade on the edge of the stacked quarters. That roughly give you a 20º angle.
