Knife belt grinders in Europe

Hello,
I am looking to purchase a belt grinder in Europe. I have looked on other European knife forums and haven't found what I am looking for.

I currently have a low power (about 250w) 50x686 (4x27) belt sander which I have been using for small modifications and kydex finishing. It is great for light work.

The ONLY knife belt grinders I can seem to find are over 1.5 KW(2hp)! I am looking for something between 600w-1KW. This would be equivalent to a Burrking or some mid range belt grinder in the US. Along with the industrial or very high power grinders comes a large price tag. I am pretty new to grinding bevels and I want something slightly lower powered, but strong enough to grind knives up to 1/4" (6.3mm) thick within some sort of reasonable time frame. I am working on some swords and large knives now and I am in need of something similar. It would be nice if I could purchase zirconia or ceramic belts for these too, but that isn't a must.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Buy the 2hp one. If you're working 1/4" steel with a 2x72 belt, then you're gonna need the power.

Europe is pretty vague.

There is quite a lot of variation between countries.

If you are in the UK, have a look on British Blades for a metric version of the KMG clone
You can build it yourself, or buy one ready made from Aly Not sure on the spelling
http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?22439-Grinder-plans

The standard here is 2x72" belts, yours will vary.

With 220v standard I would think 2HP would be no problem to run.
1HP is minimum

Just my 2 cents
I live in Belgium and I recently bought a small (5cm by 1m or something) at a knife show in Gembloux.

In my opinion, the best place to buy a belt grinder in EU is at knife shows.
There is one in Tiel called the DKE on 20 august fyi. Hope it helps

Basically, most of the places that would sell machinery like this would also be able to ship it somewhere within the region. But, to be more specific, I am in Slovakia. There is one place in the Czech Rep, that I am considering and that is the place I referenced. The lowest power model they have is about 2HP.

What is the power grit in Slovakia? This should be your first question if you want to buy a complete, ready to go grinder with motor.

Thanks for the link. The good thing is, for Slovakia, my options are available within the entire continent. It is basically based of the typical sizes of machines used in Europe.

Otherwise buy a grinder in the US and add your own motor.

The following link may be an option, it runs on 220 V, 50 Herz 1 phase or 400V 3 phase. I have looked into Kalamazoo and Burrking and alike, but those are not available in Europe as far as I can tell. If someone knows a retailer or some seller that has them in Europe, that would be awesome since, I am from the US and looking to go back at some point. As far as I can tell Nordell doesn't stock belts to fit that machine and I have never seen that size. The typical standards for larger machines that I have seen are 50 x 1500 or 50 x 2000. The belts for these can be found in Germany, the UK, and most of Europe in various types like ceramic, zirconia, and aluminum oxide all in various grits, whereas, I don't even know where to get belts to fit this and the grits may be limited.

This is the basic dilemma here. Thanks for the help here...

the 2000 mm belts are 79 inches.
Any toolbar type grinder should have enough adjustment to fit those or 2x72" belts. with just 3.5" more toolbar stickout

I suppose your first decision should be which belt size you want to use and where you want to get it from.

Truegrit and other suppliers should ship to you, Klingspore is in Germany, 3M is worldwide...

According to Nordellknives, the Hakonsson grinder will be able to use belts from 1800-2400mm (72"-94"ish) depending on contactwheel size. Nordell stocks 50x2000mm belts from 3m, I get mine from there.
However since I got a grinder able to use even 72" belts, I will be buying some of them stateside from now on, since there is a wider selection in the US.

Der Kleine Messerladen from germany makes 2 fine machines. They have a big and a small model. Sounds like the small model is something for you.
