I have a few ideas for knife designs, but due to a lack of raw artistic ability on my part, they don't seem to translate very well on paper.

A)Could someone give me some tips on blade design? Is there any general guidelines I should follow? Do I decide on materials, dimensions, blade design, handle desgin in a particular order?

B)Is there an inexpensive computer-assisted drafting program that is suitable for a beginner such as myself, that would allow for reasonable representation of my ideas??

Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated! Thank-you in advance!

I use John Apperson's CadStd. There is a freeware version available on his site. I use an older shareware version that installs easily and does everything I ask of it.

His software is at www.cadstd.com

I've downloaded the program, and I'm gonna start "fiddling" with it now!

MD, let the creative juices flow! Draw what ever you picture in your mind. Don't throw out your drawings either. You might think they're lame or stupid ideas now, but sometimes the best ideas are put away for a while and then when you go back to look at them you see the genius in them. When you come up with a pattern you think is a good one, cut it out of poster board, and if you have the tools, make a model out of wood. That way you not only see all the physical characteristics of the design but also if the dimensions are good and everything fits and works right.
Whew, I need to right a self motivation book, nd read it myself.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

) I also write lyrics, and I find that something that doesn't appeal to me NOW, might do so in the future, so I always keep any ideas I happen to jot down ... just in case! I'll have to do that with my blade ideas as well.

I never considered paper/wood prototypes before! That adds a completely new dimension to design ...... hmmmm.

Thank-you! Wise words from a wise man!

MD when i have a idea of a knife, i just start grinding, the rest of the design seems to reveal it self to me as i work. i don,t think i have any more in my diaster knife box than other guys. when i started i would use 1095 carbon first. now i start with ats-34. to answer your question there is no solid fomula. unless you are a production shop. you wil find what works for you. god luck!
