Knife blade design?

I was looking at the blade variations of the old Remington folding knives and was thinking... what's the difference? Many of the blades share a similar shape or form--i.e. a peak on the back where the nail nick is, so the blade can be opened.

What's the use of a stubby claw blade? The fishing knife blades are self-explanatory--they're thin and as wide as a fish.

But other designs have me baffled... I couldn't think of a purpose for some of them, other than to make the entire knife slimmer or higher, but other than that, they seem to have only minor variations that make no difference in their use.

Does anyone know what the blade designers were thinking? Did they write down why they made a blade in a certain way? Is there an interesting reference anywhere?
