How much was the original price for these? I noticed a lot of them on Ebay in the last couple of years, but not as many dealers are selling them now.

Sometimes the answers to seemingly simple questions become quite complicated. This is one of those questions. And a good example of the reasons for individual collectors to learn to do their own research.

Don't forget to search through the collectors-of-schrades-r.us website ( http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/ ) when looking for info. Finding intro dates helps you to locate the items in the catalogs, and the illustrations show you what components were included when. I found these knife care kits in flyers there.

The suggested retail price of the SK3 in 2000 was $5.99. It was listed as new that year and I did not find it listed in subsequent catalogs. Is this the Knife Care Kit you are referring to?

History of the kits? You have to go back to the mid 1960's to see the boxed presentation sets for hunting knives and hunter/folder combos. These often included a Schrade Walden labeled sharpening stone. Then along came the sheaths for the 153UH which had a stone pocket with stone, also used on the second production 165UH. And the Honesteel which was replaced with the SK1 diamond coated sharpener. The flyers give a lot of info on the other kits availability and time frames.

Hello: Once again while searching for USA made Schrade products I come across another old thread. At this very moment I'm looking to buy a Honesteel Type 2 with teardrop lanyard hole. However, I am wondering if the SK1 diamond coated sharpener is better than the Honesteel to keep a Sharpfinger sharp with less wear and chances of scratching the blades. Can anyone - hopefully Codger - feed me some info on this? Thanks.

Well, I got the Honesteel Type 2 with the teardrop hole at $18.50 plus $6 shipping, in pretty good/mint condition. A great buy? Feels great. The sheath looks well kept too. In my opinion it just needs a little love by way of cleaning, leather conditioner and a little polish to make it look almost mint. I'm still wondering about the SK1 -vs- the Honesteel - which provides a better edge and care for a knife.

Hi SolWarrior! To be honest, I never bought and tried the SK1 rod. I didn't care for the Honesteel on smaller knives, but picked up a Gerber diamond rod (similar to the SK1 in a retractable "ink pen" type case with pocket clip), tried it and never looked back. I've worn out several over the years and have many different stones, but the diamond hone (freehand) is my go-to.

Hello Codger! I'm currently busy getting ready to leave but anyway.... So, unlike most of the USA made Schrade Honesteel that I've seen these diamond rods do wear out, huh? I tend to lean towards the classics and found some interest in a USA made "Schrade Old Timer diamond Jewelstik Knife Sharpener". Although you've never tried I still rely on you expert opinion for anything Schrade. What do you believe to be a good general price for one in good condition? Thanks in advance!

PS - If I don't get a chance to reply soon please know that your reply is greatly appreciated. Also, I sincerely hope that I'm not in any violations by asking about prices on here. Thanks again, buddy!

We aren't able to advise on values at your membership level. My best advice is to set up a search in Ebay of current and ended auctions for them and average them. Consider that they weren't sold in great numbers to begin with, so might be uncommon on today's market. Yes, with a lot of use, the diamond (dust) coatings can wear out. Gerber is good with their warranty on theirs so far, but as you know, the Schrade warranties ended when Schrade did in July of 2004. Good luck with your search!

I bought two NOS SK1s in the last year on ebay. $15.46 and $8.00, delivered. The Jewelstiks (SK1) can still be had in multiple configurations, but they may be branded with Buck instead. Taylor doesn't carry them. I use them with great success on most knives, including filet and fixed blade hunting knives. The Gerbers that Codger posted about are great for smaller knives and fish hooks. I carried them for years in my fishing vest. Another good choice along the same line as the Gerber is the EZE Lap EZ-M. About the same size as the Gerber with brass instead of aluminum handle and belt sheath.

I am a fan of the EZE Lap, partly because the brass reversible handle has a retro charm. I still have my Dad's, from the 1960s, with an oil-tanned sheath. It is a 'Pat. Pending' and is slightly longer than current production.

Thanks Codger, Saddlebum & Tongueriver: The numbers on the NOS SK1's are very helpful and much appreciated, Saddlebum. Being new to rods except for one that came with a kitchen knife set that I hardly ever used, I'm now considering them as another option to help keep my personal knives sharp while avoiding wear. The rods seem to be the more logical choice in round vs flat surfaced sharpening tools. Less blade surface contact means less wear with the rod, at least in my mind. Thanks again guys for the awesome feedback.
