I am going to be traveling via plane to Durham, Conn. in September to visit family, and will take a two day trip into NY to visit Central Park and a few museums. I will be spending a little over a week in Conn., and this will be my first trip to those states, actually my first quality time on the eastern seaboard. I am looking forward to it.
I have two questions.

My EDC include a CS Voyager with 4" blade and a Leatherman Wave tool. I wear them ALL the time, but for the first time in my life I am unsure about what to do with my tools. I would like to take both, because they are almost part of my body, but am not sure if I should. I would like to take at least the Wave tool, but wanted to get advise from you all. (oh, whatever I do take will go in my checked luggage; I am not that stupid...) Whatever I do take, should I leave it at home when I go into NY? Just want to avoid problems, and I am kind of a small town kind of guy. But will feel naked without my tools.

My other question is to inquire if any of you folks would recommend any cutlery related sights, shops or things to do while I am in the neighborhood.
Thanks much,
Brome

I went to Ellis Island last summer and that was the only place I encountered security in NYC.

They had airport style metal detectors and x-rays (the ones that show different metal types in different colors), but the employee's did not inspire confidence. Largely because the X-ray operator was unable to distinguish between the pale green of my cousins camera gear and the BRIGHT HOT NEON PINK of my knives. Knives that I was able to pull out and slide into the camera bag, right in front of another security goon.

I do appreciate what security does however, the mother of 5 in front of us with a bag of fruit was not allowed to bring a lethal looking paring knife with her.

Wapiti,

The limit here is under 4" blade length. I've spoken with some LEOs here and generally knives aren't a problem, but fixed blades give them pause. So folders are generally safer to carry.

The Empire state building has xray machines and metal detectors, but will allow you to check knives. Trying to get to Ellis island the statue of liberty, the "security" guards tried to confiscate my knives   so just leave them at home.

Give me a holler if you need anything while you're here!

New York is tough that way. That is why I maintain some sort of G-10 ware or my trusty MD MX Ceramic knives. So long as there is no x-ray or body searches, these work fine. I got them when buildings my clients are in started to use extraordinary security measures.

I have a MD G-10 knife for sale on the forum and am surprised no one so far has expressed interest. There IS a place for a decent non-metallic knife in some folks collections.

Are you going to be in Durham Sept. 26,27,& 28th? That's the week-end of the Durham Fair...but you probably know that already. No problem here with knives. Try to get to the Victorinox store at Westfarms Mall in Farmington...great display of their stuff as well as custom makes and the other big names.Hope you have a great trip!;)

New York - Iceberg Army Navy store has a decent assortment of production knifes. Paragon Sporting goods has production and customs.

If you can get out to Long Island, visit the Bladesman and TNT Gunnery's knife shop. Those both are excellent. In Seaford, Long Island.

Thanks for all the replys and suggestions.
Sounds like I might take my Voyager with, but leave it at home when I go to NY, but will keep my Wave on me; it seems pretty harmless, anyway. And it is the jack of all trades anyway.
I will miss the fair. I am going to only be there from Sept 1-7, just a short trip this time.
Thanks for the suggestions on knife spots, I will try and shoe-horn in all I can.
Should be fun, even if I don't get to any knife stores.

Durham is a typical "Old New England" town. There's no reason to go anywhere else:cool:

If your going to tourist spots or cultural area you can leave your steel in the hotel. The limit is under four inches but many cops do not know the real law and many go by the four finger ruler.
You might get to keep it or lose it if you enter a building and you go off or try to check the blades. They say they will check it and then may say the are taking it because its more then four inches. They may or may not have the right to do so. But you may then have to face some cops or go to the station house to get an explaination or maybe arrested.
There are a lot of young new cops in the city with no real experience yet.
I do not think its worth it as a visitor to go through this potential trouble.
I think a good metal pen and maybe the leatherman is okay. There are buildings that will not allow you to check them in or will deny you access.
Overall the city is very safe .If you stay out of the bad areas which I do not think you should be going to anyway, you will be quite safe.
Have a good safe trip.

The Arms and Armor room at the Metropolitan Museaum of Art is a MUST.
If you postpone your visit until November 7th you could come to the East Coast Custom Knife Show!
Under 4" is the way to go...look for the metal detectors before you get on line and work out a plan. Putting your knife in the wifey's purse somtimes works.
Whether you tell her or not, is up to you ;)

If you're going to be in Durham next town over is Middlefield There is a gun store called Cabetas field and stream. Take a look there. They always had a nice assortment of custom knives.
