I don't know why, but I decided to ask the students in my class today how many normally carry knives. These are folks who work in warehouses or in offices adjacent to warehouses. They are all government employees, 18 men and 2 women.

14 of the 20 normally carry knives (1 of the women included).

Here's an interesting item though. Most of them flew in to Columbus Ohio for the class. Of the 14 who normally carry knives, only 7 brought their knives with them.

Apparently, a lot more people carry knives than I thought. Also, the no knives in the cabin rule has an effect on people carry ANY knives - even in their checked baggage when flying (it seems).

Please note - this is an entirely unscientific survey.

Try asking around - your mileage may vary.

You might ask the ones who flew in how many of them brought any checked luggage. Many people don't, on the principle that there are only two kinds of luggage -- carry-on and lost.

I guess the corollary to that now is there are only two kinds of knives -- left home and lost. :(

Well... I can tell ya right now that 3 outta 4 members of my family regularly carry knives.
My brother never carries more than his keychain SAK, but hey if it's enough for him, fine.
I always carry at least one "knife-knife", that is to say - not a multi-tool, usually a neck knife or a pocket clip folder and in certain applications will also carry a Leatherman Wave
My dad carries his Deluxe SAK at almost all times, a smaller keychain SAK for those extremely rare times he isn't carrying the deluxe SAK, and he also almost always carries the Kershaw Whirlwind I bought him last Christmas :)
My mom doesn't carry a knife... but strangely enough is always asking myself or my dad for mine... hmmm.

I have travelled by plane twice since 9-11, and have carried knives in my checked baggage both times. Shoot, I even bought a Kershaw Whirlwind on one trip and brought it home. I can't take them on the plane, but the first thing I do after I get my luggage back is unpack my pocketknives. :D I just feel funny without them.

My mom got all worried that I would get held up at the airport when I went home if I took my Randall Mod 14 and my BK&T Campanion home (and left them:( ) even though I put them in checked luggage. A lot of people are getting more afraid of knives, but that never really stopped us before, did it? Fortunately, most rational people see taht knives are used (in the huge majority of contxts) as handy tools. You wouldn't believe how many of my fellow Plebes ask to use my SOG Power Lock or Spydie Native.

Just my $.02
