knife cleaning

hello everyone, i hope uall are having a sharp day. i have 3 western knives that were my dads.(rip) one is in ok ruff cond. the other 2 are a little
rusty, i can make out the western name. can someone tell me the best way to clean them please. i do have some very fine 800 grit sand paper,
also have some,i think its called rustaway, i got a gallon jug at the auto parts store. THANKYOU revolvertom.
 
Welcome! Can you post some pictures? There are many ways to clean a knife and pictures will give us more information to point you in the right direction.
 
Put the sandpaper away!
Buy some 0000 steel wool, and then post pictures of the knives.

thankyou for ur replay. i will have to get some help from a friend with the pics. look for my pics in the next couple days. i know how to clean old revolvers
but not knives.old guns are easy,you dont clean them.
 
Western knives are fairly common, so cleaning one is not going to effect value. i would start with red scotch-brite and some mineral oil. once you get the surface rust off, you can see what needs to be done.

WD 40 is a great cleaner. Especially with 00 steel woo.
