Some of the knives that I pick up from garage and yard sales are quite dirty. I'm thinking that before I blow them out with an air hose, I'd soak them first in some mild solvent. Is there a solvent that is OK for both good bone or stag handles and also cheap plastic?

If they are not antiques, I like Simple Green, a lot of hot water, and an old tooth brush. Then dry real well (alcohol, blow dry, WD-40) and oil. WD-40 is good at cleaning metal, not sure I'd want it near real bone or a wood that wasn't stabilized.
