Here's an idea that may be real old, probably discussed here before, but I'm a noobie: When I want to clean rust scale off an old blade, which I have a lot of, I'll do it with the graphite tip of a pencil - knocks the rust off real quick, great for showing up those tang marks with no damage...

yeah, cleans rust and other junk quite well.
