A forum member just finished making me a neck knife out of 1095 and I'm assuming that it will not like sitting against my salty sweaty chest all day. What can I coat the knife with to keep it from rusting away?

Thanks!

Use the search, this has been discussed a few times recently. There is an ad from a guy who does Cera-Kote in the classifieds that might interest you.

Trust me, I have been on plenty enough forums to know that you need to use the search button before you post a thread.

^ this is a search for "knife coating". I searched for other words with the same result. Can you direct me to the links you speak of?

Thanks

I don't have any links handy, but can give you some more specific search terms. Parkerizing, blueing, Cerakote, Gunkote, patina. You should turn up some more terms and a good deal of info with these.

Page 3 of the "supplies and tools" section of the classifieds has the ad from the Cerakote guy.

quick, cheap solution is to paint it with krylon then after it's dry, bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Not as durable as duracoat or cerakote, but a lot cheaper and you can do it yourself.

Thank you guys for all of the awesome info. I will be checking into everything that was recommended.

Question for 1066vik, what does baking krylon do?

^ Thank you. Good info for my other knives but this particular knife needs a coating that doesn't have to be re-applied.

If your neck knife has anything epoxied on like a handle, you could run into some problems with a bake-on finish. Most epoxies release at lower temps than are required for bake on finishes. I believe that KG Gun-Kote has a "no bake" coating that might be just the ticket. I've dealt with them before and they are very helpful. Give them a call and I'm sure that they'll steer you in the right direction. (715) 934-3566

Good luck!

A suggestion for future projects, would be to make any necker out of stainless steel.

old thread, but for anyone still looking, missionspec camo does coatings, just google them and go to their site

Industrial hard chrome plating, properly applied, will protect the blade better than any other finish except the expensive nitrided coatings. IHC should never have to be reapllied. Dura/Cera stuff is just tough paint.
